edifices that address spiritual and secular requirements. Her name is synonymous to
modern ecclesiastical architecture.
José María V. Zaragoza (National Artist for Architecture, 2014)
This style can make forms not found in the real world.
The Style of Fantasy
He is a self-taught artist, he has worked as an illustrator creating artworks for film,
independent comics and underground music labels. He later studied film and animation at
the Mowelfund Film Institute producing two animated short films as a result.
Victor Balanon
He recognized as the master mat weaver among the Sama indigenous community of Ungos
Matata.
Haja Amina Appi (Mat Weaver, Sama, Tandubas, Tawi-Tawi, Awarded 2004)
He believed that mortal men are as vulnerable to the powers and the whims of gods and
spirits as the beasts that roam the land and the birds that sail the sky.
Uwang Ahadas (Musician, Yakan, Lamitan, Basilan, Awarded 2000)
He designed more than 300 productions distinguished for their originality since 1969.
Sensitive to the budget limitations of local productions, he harnessed the design potential
of inexpensive local materials, pioneering or maximizing the use of bamboo, raw abaca, and
abaca fiber, hemp twine, rattan chain links and gauze cacha.
Salvador Bernal (National Artist for Theater Design, 2003)
He is a director for film and broadcast arts, espoused the term ―freedom of expression‖ in
the Philippine Constitution. Brocka took his social activist spirit to the screen leaving behind
66 films which breathed life and hope for the marginalized sectors of society —
slumdwellers, prostitute, construction workers, etc.
Lino Brocka (National Artist for Cinema, 1997)
The actual objects or subjects from nature or reality are represented. Either they look exactly
like the object copied naturally or realistically or they can be stylized for as long as the
essential parts are present in the artwork.
Representational Art
This is achieved by through sharpness or softness, distinctness or vagueness of form and
contour.
FocusIt means that the artist is required to be a master in the use of material/medium, in
technique and craftsmanship.
Fine Arts
It is a traditional decorative body art popular in the northern region.
Tattoo Art
It is uniquely use a specific language that applies to visual and auditory elements, media,
techniques and conventions.
Theater Arts
It is named after the playwright Bertolt Brecht. His intention was to appeal to his audience’s
intellect in presenting moral problems and reflecting contemporary social realities on stage.
The Brechtian style
He is a poet and visual artist from Manila, Philippines. Maxine has received critical acclaim
for her experimental mixed-media assemblages-- each an adventurous fusion of poetry and
visual art.
Maxine Syjuco
This is where the artwork seems to have been made by a reporter who is observing a
subject, or a photographer using a candid camera.
The Artist as Detached Observer
The brown powder can be used for painting. It is used like watercolor or other water-soluble
medium, where the artist uses water in varying amounts to be able to paint using the
medium and get different values on paper.
Coffee Painting
It involves ecological concerns and it is a celebration of an artist’s connection with the
beauty of nature, the natural world and the environment.
Environmental installation
It means painting an accurate depiction of physical objects or people. This is not easy to
achieve. It involves creating an impression of reality through a selective use of visual facts.
The Style of Objective Accuracy
He was born and brought up in Bohol. He does mixed media paintings, doing realism,
abstraction, and portraiture. For his sculptures, he uses metal and welds them together to
make interesting forms.
Sam Penaso
It puts emphasis on an idea or concept rather than in an art object that can be touched. It
may include a written text, instruction, or a question that leads the viewer to think about an
idea.
Conceptual installation art
It is seen by the eyes and understood by the mind. Moving and non-moving images appeal
to visual perception and this makes the scope of visual art very broad.
Visual Art
He is a playwright, thespian, poet, teacher, critic and translator, marked his career with
prolific artistic productions.
Rolando S. Tinio (National Artist for Theater and Literature, 1997)
This is also known as an “Illusion of reality” is created by eliminating details that the eye
might see. Two ways of doing this is by “direct piling up of detail to create an impression of
the complexity of the object” or “the suppression of detail without the loss of essential
traits”.
The Artist as Selective Eye
This helps in creating realistic images. The amount of light an object receives, the shapes of
its shadows, the transition from light to shadow, and the source of light are the things the
artist learns to observe and control in the medium he/she uses.
Control and handling of illumination
He was a filmmaker of the first order and one of the very few who can be truly called a
maestro. Critics have hailed him as ―the genius of Philippine cinema.
Ishmael Bernal (National Artist for Cinema, 2001)
It is a ballet performance involving several artists and art group. It was staged in February
2016 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, concluding Ballet Philippines‟s 46th season
and as a special event of Art Fair Philippines 2016.
“Opera”
This is also called a picture frame stage. The performance takes place behind the
proscenium opening or frame of the stage.
Proscenium
It situates and roots individual problems within the larger picture of a class society. This is a
reaction to the socioeconomic-political issues that confronted Filipinos.
Social Realism
An artist that continues to push the boundaries of drawing, he has been creating large-scale
charcoal works that are part drawing, performance, and installation.
Christina Dy
It is different from visual arts discussed in previous chapters because they move in time and
space and are usually done by a group of people of different knowledge and skills, each one
playing a specific role.
Performing arts
It focuses on the problems of individuals. Describing and diagnosing their anguish and joy,
ambition and frustration, their hope and despair.
Psychological Realism
These are being used for clothing, bags and accessories and they are based on folk art and
design.
Woven products (textile, fabrics and clothing)
He leaves his farm in San Quintin, Abra, he makes it a point to wear a tabungaw.
Teofilo Garcia (Casque Maker, Ilocano, San Quintin, Abra, Awarded 2012)
This also uses elements of art and principles of design but the artworks do not represent or
show a person, place or thing in the natural world.
Non-objective Art
He reshaped the urban landscape with a distinctive architecture reflective of Philippine Art
and Culture. He believes that the true Philippine Architecture is ―the product of two great
streams of culture, the oriental and the occidental… to produce a new object of profound
harmony.
Leandro V. Locsin (National Artist for Architecture, 1990)
It can now be made from different materials like driftwood, dried grass, dried flowers, coco
twigs, crochet, pandan leaves, tiles, resin, wood, abalone shell, capiz and other materials
abundant in the region.
Decors
She has been relying on her instincts, practiced hands, and innate skills for years, starting at
the age 16, when she learned the art of weaving from her aunt. She was never formally
taught, but picked up the art on her own by copying the patterns.
Magdalena Gamayo (Textile Weaver, Ilocano, Pinili, Ilocos Norte, Awarded 2012)
It is an art form consisting of three-dimensional works that are often site-specific and
designed to transform interior or exterior spaces to achieve an effect.
Installation Art
He is one of the well known contemporary interdisciplinary artists. He does paintings,
sculptures, installation art, set design for theater plays and films and he also does fashion
design.
Leeroy New
He is a native of Bohol and was the youngest National Artist awardee. Considered the Father
of Modern Philippine Sculpture, he has helped shape the local sculpture scene into what it
is now.
Napoleon Abueva (Natonal Artist for Sculpture, 1976)
It is the most popular among the fine arts because almost any theme can be applied here.
The materials in painting are flexible, durable and readily available.
Painting
It is known for his interdisciplinary practice, Leeroy New created a large-scale otherworldly
landscape in the now closed Manila Contemporary gallery, for his iconic cast of aliens and
monsters.
“Gates of Hell”
Her strokes are firm and sure, her color sensitivity acute, and her dedication to the quality of
her products unwavering. She recognizes the need for her to remain in the community and
continue with her mission to teach the art of pis syabit weaving.
Darhata Sawabi (Textile Weaver, Tausug, Parang, Sulu, Awarded 2004)
This is sometimes called the “Black Box” theater because they are big empty boxed spaces
painted black inside.
Flexible theater
It is made of abaca are decorated with colorful beads and the buri can be found in Bohol.
They are thin and light and they are perfect for indoors, and are easy to bring for travelers.
Footwear
It is the general term used for art that is made of clay that has been heated to a very high
temperature so that it becomes hard.
Ceramics
These are pieces produced by indigenous people, which are for practical use and also as
decoration.
Folk Arts
From this art the subjects are taken from reality and nature but the artist presents them in
ways different from the way they are seen in everyday life.
Abstract Art
It uses realistic situations and combines them with non-realistic ones.

naglalahad ng opinyong mapanindgan at maipagtanggol sa tulong ng mga patnubay at
totoong datos upang makapanghikayat ng mambabasa.
