The Impacts of Colonialism to the Colonized Country
It seems that it is generally, if not universally, agreed that colonialism is a form of
domination– the control by individuals or groups over the territory and/or behavior of other
individuals or groups (Horvath 46). With that, the pain that colonization has brought to its
colonies can still be felt even at the present moment and to conclude that there are impacts
other than negative ones would be an insult to these nations.
Nocon 2
The said impacts of colonization vary from colony to colony but there are two negative
effects that stood out the most upon research because of how they can be commonly found
within the affected countries and minorities. Plantation mentality and the destruction of
indigenous social, political, and economic structures are those being referred to in the sentence
above. Colonizers successfully took over the communities by imposing their cultural practices
on the colonized countries, denting the latter’s own traditions, beliefs, identities, and social
values that were present even before they had been “discovered”. Once the colonizers have
managed to weaken the previous structure, they treated the class of workers as slaves to have
cheaper production of goods for their own benefit. The plantation mentality act only benefits
the oppressor while frequently neglecting the suppressor.
The effects stated above are just a few of the many impacts of colonialism. Considering
the examples given, it is safe to say that “the damage has been done” and these effects still
impact the present situation of the affected countries. Overall, colonialism, for the colonized,
is like a deep wound; it may heal over time but will always leave a mark.
