Course Description and Objectives
This course introduces the subject of business finance. It provides students with a general understanding of the
basic financial concepts that every manager should know. Students will learn basic concepts of business finance
including business ethics, financial statement analysis, financial ratio analysis, the time value of money, bond
valuation, stock valuation, and the effect of these concepts on business decision-makings.
Assignments and Course Prerequisites
Students will undergo chapter assessments following the completion of each chapter’s lecture. The due dates
for the graded assessments will be announced in class. If you miss class, you are responsible for what
happens in class (any and all announcements and discussions) and for obtaining the information covered from a
classmate. All assessments must be completed by their ANNOUNCED due dates.
Some end-of-chapter problems will be assigned as practice problems to sharpen students’ understanding of
financial theory and analytical techniques. These problems will not be graded, but I’ll discuss them in class if
needed. Students are responsible for all the subject matter discussed in the class. You will need a financial
calculator to work on many of the book problems, especially the time value of money problems. I will use the
Texas Instruments BAII PLUS calculator in class.
Examinations and Grading
a) There will be three in-class examinations including the final examination.
b) There are no make-up examinations. Absence from a scheduled examination without approval of the
instructor and a valid written excuse will result in a grade of zero. Approval to be absent from an
examination will be granted only in the case of extreme personal emergency. If approval is granted by the
instructor, the student must make up the exam immediately. To pass the course, students should take all
three examinations on the scheduled dates. Missing one exam will result in failure in this course.
c) The exams will be closed book and based on assigned readings, lectures, practice and assessment problems.
d) Only a calculator, pencils, and an eraser can be used during examinations. No computers will be allowed.
Any type of academic dishonesty (plagiarism, copying, cheating, turning on cellular phones, etc.) in
attendance checks, project, class sessions, and examinations will result in a final course grade of "F" and
will be reported to the University.
