The Right Clothes For You
Clothes shopping can be difficult and confusing. Sometimes
you head to a department store with an idea in mind, but
once you get there you have no idea where to start. There
are so many different styles, cuts, sizes, colors and brands
that you may feel overwhelmed. Having an idea of what
looks good on you will make choosing good clothes much
easier. If you have a closet full of clothes you never wear
because you don’t look good, take notes on the following
tips:
• Decide which features you would like to emphasize. You can use outfits to make aspects of
your appearance look bigger, smaller, more obvious, or less noticeable.
• Know your size. If you haven’t measured your body, do it before you go shopping. If you
know your right clothes’ size, it’s going to be easier to find out the correct clothes.
• Buy clothing that looks great on you now. If you aren’t a teenager anymore, don’t wear
clothing that doesn’t go according to your age. If you are chubbier now, avoid the small sizes
you used to wear. Shop for your current figure, not the one you think you should have. You
don’t want to waste money on clothes you might never wear.
• Check how clothing looks from behind. This step is crucial in finding flattering clothes that a
lot of people skip. A dress or a suit can look like a perfect fit from the front but terrible from
behind.
• Don’t always follow fashion trends. You may want to keep up with new styles, but if a
certain popular look is unflattering on you, don’t wear it. Develop your own style and only
incorporate trends that fit it well.
• Find colors that work for you. These can be colors that match with your skin tone, look great
together, or are simply your favorite.
Comprehension
B. Read and answer the questions.
1. What features do we have to consider emphasizing on clothing?
2. What should we do if we aren’t too young anymore?
3. What do people usually skip when buying clothes?
4. What should we do if we want to be trendy?

Reading
We Are What We Eat
How many times have we heard that statement? Everything we eat and drink directly affects
our cells which need specific vitamins and minerals depending on the role they have to perform.
This is why it is important that we know the benefits of what we eat every day.
Carbohydrates give you energy. You can find them in bread, potatoes, rice, pasta and sugar.
Fats give you energy. There are fats in butter,
cheese, meat and oil.
Protein helps you grow and makes your
muscles strong. There is protein in meat, fish,
poultry, dairy products and nuts.
Vitamins are important for your body in
general. They are good for eyes, your bones,
your hair, your skin, etc. There are vitamins in
many types of food such as fruits, vegetables,
nuts, dairy, fish, meat, poultry, etc.
Minerals make your bones and teeth strong.
There are different types of minerals in milk,
vegetables, eggs, meat, cereals and many
other foods.
Fiber helps you clean the inside of your body. You find fiber in nuts, beans and cereals.
Water is really important for your body, especially your blood. It also helps you clean your
body from the inside and makes your skin look great. You should drink a lot of water every day.
Now that you know how food helps your body, make sure that you eat a balanced diet to give
your body the nutrients it needs to function correctly and stay healthy.
C. Think about what you usually eat. Do you need to make some changes
in your eating habits?

When
We use when, to talk about something that occurs at the same time as a longer action or event
that is described in the main clause:
Example: My mother was running when the dogs were napping.
While

Reading
J. Read the following text and write True or False next to each statement.
The Robbery
It was a sunny day. A man was wearing a black leather jacket, jeans, boots and dark sunglasses
when he walked into the Central Bank at the corner of Lincoln and Washington streets in
downtown.
The man walked up to one of the bank tellers and held up a
gun that everyone could see. When all the people in the bank
saw the gun, we understood that he was a thief. He yelled,
Give me all your money, all the money in this bank, right now!
while he was trying to make everyone frightened. We were
so afraid and we did whatever he told us to do. We all went
down to the floor while the bank tellers handed the man four
big bags full of money. After taking the money, he walked out
the door. Luckily nobody was injured.
Ten minutes later, the police came to the bank but it was too
late. At that time, the man was already gone and probably he
was leaving the city.
1. It was a cold winter day.

A Walk in the Mall
Hi! My name’s Lucy. I’m from Chicago, Illinois. I have lived here all my life. Last weekend my
mom and I went to Ford City Mall. It’s huge and amazing. There are many toy stores, clothing
stores, bookstores, department stores, and many others. My favorite one is the toy store.
First, we entered to the department store. My mom likes to go and check items at low prices.
She bought a small smart TV. I told her to buy a big one, but they were more expensive than a
complete living room set. Besides, my mom really wanted to buy more things and she wanted
to go to the clothing store before they closed. I think she was less patient than any other day.
Then, we went to the clothing store. My mom bought a pair of shoes and some jeans. They
weren’t as expensive as always, and they had as good quality as the most expensive ones.
After that, we went to the toy store. I bought a doll and a skateboard. They were $30.00 each. I
wanted to buy a bike but they were more expensive than the skateboards. Action figures were as
expensive as the dolls, but I don’t like action figures.
Finally, we went to the video game store. There are many video game toys too, but they are as
expensive as bikes! Comic books are the least expensive item in the store. They cost $3.00 each.
I wanted to buy a video game, but they weren’t as cheap as comic books, and my mom didn’t
have enough money.

Digital Disrespect: What Is It?
Spreading negative or embarrassing dirt (true, untrue, or unknown
information via text, pic or video) about someone behind their back or

Grammar
What’s a Phrasal Verb?
Phrasal verbs are multi-part verbs, they are always made up of two (or more) words.
Verb + Particle(s) (particles are small words, prepositions or adverbs: up, down, in, away,
to, back, etc.). The meaning of a phrasal verb is often very different from the meaning
of the verb without the particle.
Separable Phrasal Verbs
Some phrasal verbs are separable (words can stand between the verb and the particle)
while others are inseparable (you can’t insert any word between the verb and the particle).
Examples:
Clean Up
• You can’t go out until you clean up this mess. (clean up: not separated)
• You can’t go out until you clean this mess up. (clean … up: separated)
Put On
• Mom, I don’t want to put on this dress. It’s horrible.
• Mom, I don’t want to put this dress on. It’s horrible.
All the sentences above are correct either way. However, when you use object pronouns
(him, her, it, us, etc.). the verb and the particle must be separated:
• Mom, I don’t want to put it on. It’s hideous.
• You can’t go out until you clean it up.
Inseparable Phrasal Verbs
Take After
• I think you take after your father. (correct)
• I think you take your father after. (not correct)
Get Over
• How am I going to get over losing Maddie? (correct)
• How am I going to get losing Maddie over? (not correct)
How Do You Know If A Phrasal Verb Is Separable Or Not?
Unfortunately, there’s no way to know. You will have look it up in a dictionary and see some
example sentences. But don’t worry, with daily practice, you’ll get used to the correct forms.
H. Write S (separable) or I (inseparable) next to each phrasal verb. Use
a dictionary if necessary. Check your answers with your teacher.

Can is an informal way to ask for permission.
Could is more formal/polite.
May is even more formal/polite.
• May I close the door?
Yes, you may. / No, you may not.
• Can we go to the party?
Yes, you can. / No, you can’t.
• Could you help me, please?
Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
NOTE We never use could/couldn’t to answer a question.

Family Chores
Hi, my name is Thomas. I live with my family
in a big house. I have two sisters and one
brother. We share many chores with our
parents. My brother and I take the trash out.
We also wash our father’s car twice a
week. Every Friday, I trim the bushes and
my brother waters the plants. I also make
my bed in the morning. My sister, Emily,
sweeps the floor every evening and washes
the dishes after dinner. She also helps Mom
with shopping every Thursday. My mother
cooks for us and washes our clothes. My
father fixes anything broken at home.
Hi, my name is Molly. My family is small, my
father, my mother, my sister Joanna and I.
We live in an apartment in a tall building.
I help my family with the chores. I make
my own bed.
I set the table for dinner while mom cooks.
Every Tuesday my parents go shopping for
food and I take care of my sister Joanna and
