STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY
I learned in structural geology is about the deformation of rocks caused by stress and strain.
Forces tend to bend, twist, and fracture the rocks. The stress can be classified with the direction of the
forces. These are compressional, tensional and shear stress. Strain changes the shape or size of the rock
caused by the stress. It will happen when the rock cannot handle the stress. Rocks can be brittle and
ductile that affects its strength. I understand that structural geology is important in engineering for
construction. Rock behaviors can be determined, and the engineer can design the right materials to be
used in the project.
GEOLOGICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL INVESTIGATION IN CIVIL ENGINEERING (group of era)
In their report they focus on the site investigations about the soil properties for the proposed
design of the structure. They share about the drilling method to characterize the strength of the
foundations. Boreholes for standard penetration test. In our report we show a video about geological and
geophysical method, boreholes are used to check if what kind of soil is in the site of the construction. If
the soils are soft, the plasticity is high, and it is not a good material for the structure. Geophysical
investigations focused on subsurface investigation that are used in construction industry.
ROCK MECHANICS
Rock dynamics is about the mechanical behavior of rock and rock masses. It deals with the
mechanical properties of the rocks. Before the engineer will construct his project to the certain site. They
must be analyzed first the composition of rocks so that the design cannot be easily fail in the future. It is
important in designing and constructing a building, roads, bridges because the rocks below the structure
will react to the constructed engineering structure. It is important that these rock behavior like shear
strength will be understand.
ROCK DYNAMICS
I learned that rock dynamics includes the properties of rock materials and a specific failure of
rocks. Rock dynamics is under the rock mechanics that includes dynamic loading that that will vary on
earthquakes, vibrations, and explosions that will occur. Also, it is important to be aware and know this
topic because upon designing a structure, this could be one of the factors that can affect mostly the
structures so this means that it should not be neglected.
