PECULARITIES, PREVALENCE AND PATTERN OF OBESITY IN
TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS
AIMS: To determine the pattern of obesity found in type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Patients.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the pattern of obesity found in type 2 Diabetes
Mellitus patients.
To determine the prevalence of obesity in type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients.
To determine the prevalence/association of hypertension with type 2 Diabetes
Mellitus patients.
Obesity: can be defined in two ways
(1) Generalized obesity using the body mass index = weight
= kg/m2
Height square
OR USING
(2) Central Obesity: central obesity can further be classified using (1) waist
circumference (2) waist to hip ratio (3) Waist-to height ratio (whTr)
For generalized obesity using body mass index (weight/height2) kgm2
Generalized obesity can be further subdivided/graded as
Underweight
Body mass index < 18.5 kgm2
Normal
Body mass index between 18.5 kgm2 – 24.9 kgm2
Obesity
Body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kgm2
Obesity can graded as Grade 1 BMI = 30.0 kgm2 – 34.9 kgm2
Grade II BMI = 35.0 kgm2 – 39 kgm2
Morbid obesity
Grade III BMI ≥ 40 kgm2
Central obesity can be measured using (1) Waist circumference ≥ 102cm in men
And waist circumference ≥ 88 cm in women
(2) Or using waist/hip ratio
Waist hip ratio ≥ 0.8 in women
≥ 1 in men
Waist to height ratio (WhTr) – waist – to- height ratio of ≥ 0.5 in both male and females
was considered abnormal.
Hypertension was classified as
Systolic blood pressure ≥ 140mmHg
Or and Diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90mmHg
And also if patient is on antihypertensive agents.
