Oxidation and reduction in the displacement of metals experiment
Displacement reactions are considered as redox reactions.
A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal in its compound. The more
reactive metal is oxidized and acts as a reducing agent. The less reactive metal is
reduced and acts as an oxidizing agent.
Your task is to design an investigation to compare the reactivity of copper and zinc
during redox reactions. You will be provided with the following materials,
Zinc, copper, copper (II) sulphate solution, silver nitrate solution.
The hypothesis should outline the relationship between copper and zinc in terms
which of these species will be preferentially oxidized or reduced. You have to refer to
the chemical reactivity series in giving a scientific reason for your hypothesis.
Design should include clear statement of:
 independent and dependent variables
 description of the step-by-step methodology for the investigation, including
correct names of apparatus used in your design, amounts and concentration of
chemicals being used
 consideration of safety, ethical and environmental issue
 identification of the data that will be recorded and the design of data tables to
present this information
