video
to
the
class:
 ENGAGE
 The teacher will ask the students the following questions:
1. How Strong is the Earthquake?
2. Supposed the earthquake occurred in Visayas, would the intensity be the same
all over the Philippines?
 EXPLORE
 The teacher will ask the students to answer the following questions in their scratch
notebook.
1. When an earthquake occurs, where would shaking be greater? Near the
epicenter or away from the epicenter?
2. Where would damage be more? Near the epicenter or away from the epicenter?
3. Based on your answers to Questions A and B, where would the intensity be
higher? Near the epicenter or away from the epicenter?
 EXPLAIN
 To distinguish the two, intensity is expressed using Roman numerals (I, II,III) while
magnitude uses Hindu-Arabic numerals (2, 3, 4).
 Earthquakes with a magnitude of 2 may or may not be felt.
 Those that are felt by most people have a magnitude of 4.
 Magnitude 6 quakes can lead to a lot of damage in highly populated areas.
 Earthquakes with a magnitude of 7 can cause severe damage.
 A magnitude 8 or 9 quake results in widespread destruction, especially near the
epicenter.
 ELABORATE
 What is the importance of knowing the intensity scale and the magnitude of the
earthquake?
 EVALUATE
I. Write what intensity scale is being describe in each number.
1. Practically all man made structures are destroyed and there is massive landslides.
2. It is felt by most individuals at rest indoors.
3. Dizziness and nausea are experienced by some people.
4. Big church bells may ring.
5. People are forcibly thrown to ground.
