Introduction
These days, there aren‟t many of us who don‟t use a computer, whether it‟s for work, pleasure or both.
To use a computer, we need keyboard skills. With such widespread use of computers it is surprising
how few people can use a computer keyboard properly. Some type very slowly, and lose their train of
thought as they hunt for the correct letter. Many users type quite fast using only a couple of fingers,
with their head down and often spend a lot of time correcting mistakes.
Imagine if you could close your eyes and enter information into your computer as you thought of it;
imagine if you didn‟t have to constantly press the backspace key to correct mistakes; imagine if you
could use all your fingers instead of just a few and type faster and more accurately. How much easier
would it be to chat to friends online if you could type as fast as you can speak? You have taken the
first, most important step already - wanting to learn and improve keyboard skills.
Using this course you will:

This course uses an interactive computer program and a workbook.
The computer program is accessed via the internet – you must have internet access for it to
work.
The course uses audio - make sure your computer has a set of headphones which work.
Before starting the computer program, please read this introduction carefully.
When you have completed a lesson using the computer program, you will find it useful to refer
to the corresponding section in the workbook for additional practice. After that, return to the
computer program for the next lesson.

Introduction
Each lesson builds on the skills learned in previous lessons.
You have the option to repeat any lesson.
Lessons are divided into parts and each part concludes with a detailed report of your progress.
Most exercises are modelled on English sentences and words.
There are occasional random letter drills to help you develop concentration.

Your Workbook
This is divided into the following sections:
Introduction
This provides information on how to use the typaz program as well as information on health and safety,
ergonomics and steps to take to help prevent repetitive strain injury.
Lessons Section
The first part contains 10 lessons designed to consolidate what you have learnt using the typaz
computer program. Each workbook lesson repeats the corresponding keyboard lesson content and
more. When you have completed a lesson using typaz you should then refer to this workbook for
additional practice before returning to the typaz program for the next lesson.
Using this workbook will give you practice on typing from hard copy text and will get you used to typing
when presented with more than just one line of text. In addition to the material covering the 10 lessons
in the typaz course you will find additional practice to cover the symbol and punctuation keys.
In order to complete the exercises you will be using the Microsoft Word program. (If you do not have
this software installed on your computer, an alternative is suggested). It is not necessary for you to
have knowledge of this software as you will simply be using it as a means to type characters from the
keyboard rather than using it to format text. If you would like to save any of the work that you do in
each lesson, please ask your supervisor for instructions on how to do this.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course you should:

Be able to type the number row on the keyboard

Be able to touch-type accurately at a speed of up to 20 wpm depending on how much you
practice.

The Environment
It is important to be aware of how computers affect the environment and how the impact of this
can be reduced, for example:
Emails, documents and spreadsheets are very often printed and then viewed only once. To
reduce the amount of wasted paper, try to work with electronic files.
Recycling schemes are available for printed paper.
Both laser and inkjet printers use „consumable‟ items. Refilling inkjet cartridges and recycling
toner cartridges will help reduce the waste and improve the environment.
Different devices are available that help save power, for example, flat screen monitors use less
power than traditional monitors.
When buying equipment, look out for the Energy Star logo which indicates
energy saving features are included.
There are several ways to conserve power when using a computer, for example:
Turn off the computer at night and when not using for several hours – monitors can use a lot of
power.
Enable Power Management features for the monitor and PC.
Consider buying a laptop computer – these use about 25% of the energy of a desktop
computer

Health and Safety
Helping Prevent Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
Adjust your chair and screen to find the most comfortable position for your work. As a broad
guide, your arms should be approximately horizontal and your eyes at the same height as the
top of the screen casing.
Arrange your screen so that bright lights are not reflected in the screen. Adjust blinds to
prevent unwanted light. You shouldn't be directly facing windows or bright lights.
Make sure the characters on your screen are sharply focused and can be read easily. They
shouldn't flicker or move. Use the brightness control on the screen to suit the lighting
conditions in the room.
Posture
Alter your posture from time to time
Keep your wrists straight. Some people may find a wrist-rest useful to support the wrists.
Use a light touch when keying in, do not pound on the keys

Every 3 minutes take a 3 second break; every 20 minutes get up and stretch your limbs
Collecting work from the printer, proof-reading your work, or even gazing out of the window for a
few moments will all help to avoid eye strain.
Adopting the guidelines shown above may eliminate the risk of RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury).

Health and Safety
Stop stress building up
The following exercises can be done whilst sitting at the computer and will help to relieve any stress
that might be building from a long keyboarding session.
Start by sitting up straight, with arms hanging down and hands relaxed. Legs should be slightly apart,
with both feet on the floor.
Keeping chin tucked in:
Shrug shoulders strongly up towards the ears, hold and then release – do this 4 times
Squeeze shoulder blades together, hold and then release – do this 4 times
Rotate shoulders slowing, 4 times forwards, 4 times backwards, then release
Keeping shoulders straight:
Tilt head slowly from side to side 4 times
Nod head slowly up and down 4 times
Look over right/left shoulder 4 times each side
Holding arms out straight in front, make fists and flex wrists up and down, then round and
round several times, then relax
Flex your fingers, then shake hands vigorously and rub them together

Using a Mouse
In this course you will use a mouse, perhaps similar to the one shown below which includes a scrolling
wheel for easy navigation. However, there are various types of mouse available, some with extra
buttons, as well as wireless options.
It should be held in either your right or left hand with the buttons facing away from you.
Accurate manipulation may take some practice, as the mouse is very sensitive.
The following terms are used in this workbook to explain the use of the mouse:
Click
Press the left mouse button quickly and then release.
Double-click
Click the left mouse button twice in quick succession.
Click and Drag
Press and hold the left mouse button down while the mouse itself is moved.
Hover over
Move the mouse until the pointer on the screen is positioned correctly on the
required item.
Right-click
Click the right mouse button once, usually to display a shortcut menu.

Computer Keys
CONTROL KEY
Used for some insertion point movements. (The insertion point is the flashing
vertical black line you normally see when using a word-processing program like
Microsoft Word). Can also be used with the enter key to create a new page
ENTER KEY


This is the enter key located at the right of the main keypad. It is used to return
to the left margin at the end of a paragraph in word processing and also is used
to confirm commands.
SHIFT KEY
Hold this down in conjunction with the letter keys to type capitals. There is one
on either side of the keyboard.
Caps Lock
CAPS LOCK
Press this once to type all words in capital letters.
INSERT KEY
Insert

When this key is pressed, Insert Mode is changed to Overtype Mode - this
means that instead of text being inserted within existing text, text is overtyped.
NB This feature is de-activated by default if using Word 2007.
TAB KEY
Used to move the insertion point to a preset position on the screen

Navigation Keys
Moves the insertion point left one character
Moves the insertion point right one character
Moves up one line
Moves down one line
These navigation keys will move the insertion point as follows:
Home
to the beginning of the line of text
End
to the end of the line of text
Page Up
up to the top of the screen display
Page Down
down to the bottom of the screen display
Sometimes these keys are used in conjunction with other keys, for example:
Ctrl + Home
to move the insertion point to the beginning of the document
Ctrl + End
to move the insertion point to the end of the document

Correcting Errors in your Typing
This is the Backspace key and is used for deleting
characters to the left of the insertion point
This is the Delete key. It is used to
delete characters to the right of the
insertion point
If you make a mistake while typing you can correct it by using either
the Backspace key
or
the Delete key
Which one you use depends on the location of the insertion point. See the examples below:
Move the insertion point using the
navigation keys until it is after the
incorrect letter „i‟ then press the
Backspace key to delete the character to
the left. Then type the correct letter „y‟
Move the insertion point using the navigation
keys until it is before the incorrect letter „i‟.
Then press the Delete key to delete the

Autocorrect
If you are using Microsoft Word, you may find that the program automatically corrects certain
mis-typed words. However, do not rely on the program to do this – it is important you learn to
touch-type correctly to ensure accurate results! If words are not automatically corrected,
Microsoft Word will underline an incorrectly spelt word with a red wavy line.

Getting Started with the Online Program
You will receive details on how to login to the program.
Unable to login?
Please try again, checking that you have:
Used the correct website address for the course
Typed in your username correctly.
Typed in your password correctly.
If you have entered these correctly and still cannot login, please contact your supervisor.
Get the big picture!
Your browser may give you the option to view your course in „Full Screen‟ mode. Using Full
Screen increases the size of your window. You may find Full Screen makes it easier to view
and use the course – but you do not have to use it.
Press the F11 key on your keyboard to view the course in Full Screen.
Press the F11 key on your keyboard if you want to go back to normal view.
Starting a course
After you login the main menu is displayed:
Click Choose Course

Main Menu – Takes you back to the Main Menu.
Next Lesson – Go to the next lesson
When you have completed the Introduction - Posture lesson, proceed with each lesson in
turn. The lessons will give you plenty of practice and will remind you which finger to use for
which key.
Each lesson has an “Extension” lesson which can be used for useful additional practice – we
recommend you do these.
When practicing your keys, make sure you finish your typing with a space. The program will
not move until you have pressed the spacebar.
Finishing your session
When you are ready to finish your session, simply go to the main menu and click Logout
Starting the course again
When you next login, use the Resume button on the main menu to go straight to where you
left off.

If you do not need to go back to where you last left off, you can use a different button to
access different options:
Choose Lesson - Shows all the lessons in the current course.
Choose Course – Shows all the available courses in the program. An example course is
Basic Keyboard Lessons - this has ten lessons and extension lessons.
A course will have a number of lessons in it.
Another course is Punctuation and Symbols. Your screen will look
similar to the one below
We recommend you:
Complete one lesson at a time and do it all the way through.
Only move to a new course once you have fully completed the previous one
Try not to jump from one course to another and then to another in quick succession.
Each course is designed to build up your skills in a progressive, logical manner.

Your Progress
It is important to get regular feedback on your progress. At the end of each part of an online
lesson you will see details of your accuracy and speed in words per minute (wpm).
This is an example of the
detailed report you will receive
at the end of each lesson
In addition, you can view graphs showing your progress.
Click on the Key Graph button on the main menu to see your progress.
The graphs show your progress for the last completed lesson.
The Average Key Speeds graph analyses your speed for each key and compares it
to your goal.
The Percentage Errors per Key graph analyses your accuracy for each key and
compares it to your goal.
The results are for the lesson you last completed. It is a great way to see which lessons you
may need to repeat. The Goal is taken from the Target Speed in the Settings for the course.
This can be changed using the Settings option. You will only see a graph once the lesson you
are currently doing is complete.

Course Settings
Your program has various options already set up. These settings will suit most people most
of the time. However there may be occasions when you wish to alter these settings.
From the main menu click the Settings button.
As an example, you may wish to alter your „Target Speed‟, the speed you are hoping to
achieve by doing the course.
How to alter your Target Speed
Ensure you are in the General tab.
Highlight the current Target Speed.
Type your new Target Speed.
Click the Save button (top right).
There are various tabs on your settings panel. Each tab gives access to various options and
controls different aspects of the program. Settings apply across all courses and lessons.
To cancel an accidental change, click the Cancel button.

Using Microsoft Word
In the following section you will find lessons designed to consolidate what you have learnt
using the typaz computer program.
In order to complete the exercises you will be using the Microsoft Word program. If you do
not have Microsoft Word on your computer, you could use a free program called Microsoft
WordPad.
Starting Microsoft Word
Click the Start button (bottom left of your screen).
Hover over All Programs.
Hover over Microsoft Office.
Click Microsoft Office Word.
Hint: if you have used Microsoft Word before, it will appear on your frequently used program
list when you click the Start button.
This is how to start WordPad, if you do not have Microsoft Word:
Click the Start button (bottom left of your screen).
Hover over All Programs.
Hover over Accessories.
Click WordPad.

The Word screen
Insertion
point
WORK AREA
When the Microsoft Word program has opened, you can start to type in text straight away. At
the top left of the blank document on screen is a flashing vertical black line known as the
insertion point. This indicates the point at which text is inserted when typed.
To save your document
It is not absolutely necessary to save in the early stages, however, if you do wish to do this
then speak to your supervisor for more guidance about how and where to save your work.
To save your document:
Click the save button
at the top left of your screen.
Type a suitable name for the document.
Choose a suitable folder, or simply use the My Documents folder.
Click Save.
To close the document
Click the Close button on the program‟s title bar. Look to the top right of your screen - it looks
like an X .

Lessons Section
Using this Workbook
Once you have completed a lesson using the typaz program, you can then practice the keys
you have learnt by turning to the appropriate lesson in this workbook. You should then type
from the text provided into a blank document in the Microsoft Word program.
Practising in this way will assist you with typing from hard copy rather than typing from the
screen and also get you used to typing continuous lines of text. It is important that you
continue to touch-type and do not look at the keys. Remember to feel for the raised ridges on
the F and J keys to help with the placement of your fingers on the home keys.
Your work will not be automatically corrected when you type so care must be taken with your
accuracy. Do not rush the typing. Make sure you are typing steadily and avoid looking at the
keys.
KEEP GOING!..........
….no matter what, even if you feel frustrated. As with learning any new skill, learning to type
is awkward, especially if you are breaking years of poor typing habits. You will eventually
gain an invaluable life skill and enjoy the use of your computer more!

Lesson Six – The Caps Lock Key
Caps Lock key
When you need to type several capital letters one after the other, the caps lock key on the left
hand side of the keyboard situated above the shift key, should be pressed. This means that
you are able to type words in capitals without using the shift key. A light will appear above
the number keypad on the right hand side of the keyboard to indicate that the caps lock key is
active. Press the caps lock again to release. Use the fourth finger on the left hand for this.

letters are typed with the fingers of the left hand on Qwerty

Lesson Nine – Building Accuracy and Speed
Research results clearly show that fine motor skills, like
typewriting, are learnt in the minimum time if the interval between
reading a letter and hitting the key is as brief as possible and if the
correctness of a keystroke is known immediately. This is why we
believe that computer aided instruction will revolutionise the
teaching of typewriting. However, we must recognise that the
computer is only a piece of teaching equipment which will help you
to learn to touch type.
How you lay out your work is something you will have to learn
elsewhere. If you plan to become a secretary you will need
considerable instruction in the art of good correspondence.
There are six basic concepts in learning typing skills.
The most important are:
1. Speed and accuracy skills must be developed separately with
little concern for the other factor. Most of the time should be
devoted to practising speed.
2. Plain prose should be used for practice material.
3. You must practise speed by attempting to type at a rate of 10
percent faster than your normal rate, until whole phrases seem to
flow from your fingers.

Planet earth is 4,600 million years old. If we condense this
inconceivable time span into an understandable concept, we can
liken Earth to a person of 46 years of age.
Nothing is known about the first seven years of the life of this
person, and whilst only scattered information exists about the
middle span, we know that only at the age 42 did the Earth begin
to flower. Dinosaurs and the great reptiles did not appear until one
year ago, when the planet was 45. Mammals arrived only eight
months ago; in the middle of last week man like apes evolved into
ape like men, and at the weekend the last ice age enveloped the
Earth.
Modern man has been around for four hours. During the last hour,
man discovered agriculture. The industrial revolution began a
minute ago. During those sixty seconds of biological time, Modern
man has made a rubbish tip of Paradise. He has multiplied his
numbers to plague proportions, caused the extinction of 538
species of animals, ransacked the planet for fuels and now stands
like a brutish infant, gloating over this meteoric rise to ascendancy,
on the brink of a war to end all wars and of effectively destroying
this oasis of life in the solar system.

Developing text exercises has proved to be an interesting study of
letters and letter patterns. When I left the tunnel, I spotted a
kangaroo but it leapt out of the cave and into the bush.
Studies show that about 7 out of every 10 words are among the
500 most common words in the English language; half of all text
uses about 90 of the most common words.
As I walked through the bush, I came to a clearing. In the middle
of it was an enormous gum tree. While staring at the tree, I
noticed a wombat sleeping on the grass. It was plump, blue grey
and old. I quietly walked over and patted it.
Most likely to appear in text in order of frequency the, of, and, a, to,
in, I, you, that, it, is. With, is 16th on the list; but, 27th.
The larger the sample of words studied the more different words
are found. Many experts feel exercises should be made up of
normal everyday English text as this contains the normal
distribution of patterns and letters. They question the need to
practise unusual patterns and words. It therefore seems logical to
use ordinary words and sentences to teach the keyboard.
The wombat woke up immediately: two young ones were sleeping
underneath. Softly, I picked one of them up and cradled it in my
arms. When I went to place it on the ground again, the mother and
other young one had gone. I placed the wombat on the ground
and started to walk away. When I turned around, I found that it
was following me. It was obvious that it thought I was its mother,
so I picked it up and continued with my journey.

It is not necessary to type a double u, v, or x as we have found
only 3 words containing these combinations, SAVVY, DIVVY and
VACUUM.
I heard my uncle‟s tractor come around the corner.
No common word contains a double x.
In summary, we have given you different stories about various
topics so that you will type all letter patterns yet not become bored
with the content.
I explained to him about the wombat and he let me climb onto the
tractor and took me back to his house.
When you can accurately type the text shown on the screen at, say
30 wpm, you will have achieved your objective and you should be
well satisfied.
When I got back it was 4.30 pm. When I look back on that day, I
rate it 10 out of 10.
