Course Rationale: This area of instruction provides content for knowledge and skills required in the
technology-based workplace. The demand will continue to expand for individuals to use computer
hardware and software to create documents, gather information, and solve problems. This class is vital for
students planning to enter the workforce or postsecondary education.
Course Description: This course is designed to help students master beginning and advanced skills in the
areas of word processing, database management, spreadsheet applications, desktop publishing,
multimedia, Internet usage, and integrated software applications. Other topics include file management on
local, network and cloud-based storage media; as well as navigation of web-based information, data
security and personal information assurance.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of Computer Applications, the
student will be able to:
1. Use operating system tools to manage local, network and cloudbased content.
2. Use word processing software to create, edit and format documents.
3. Use spreadsheet software to calculate, organize, edit and present
numerical data.
4. Use database software to create files, enter and edit data, perform queries, and create forms and
reports.
5. Use presentation software to create, edit, and enhance presentations.
6. Use browser applications to navigate web-based information sources and applications.
7. Use e-mail applications to manage contacts, calendar and send/receive messages.
8. Identify and recognize appropriate data security practices and information assurance.
Course Assessment:
1. Informal evaluation to check student progress shall include teacher observation of the student's class
participation, discussion and application of material presented.
2. The grading scale listed in the Student Handbook will be used. All grading policies discussed in the
student handbook are also applicable.
3. Grades will be based upon daily assignments, tests, and other projects.
4. Daily participation grades will be recorded weekly.
5. Students will be notified of their grades periodically throughout each quarter. Additional updates
may be requested at any time during the quarter.
Course Materials:
1. The textbook is CMPTR (with CourseMate), 3rd Edition, Pinard/Romer.
2. Microsoft Office 2016 will be utilized.
3. Assessment, Training, and Projects will be completed using SAM 2016.

Web 2.0 Tools
Web 2.0 tools are the second generation in the development of the World Wide Web, conceived as a
combination of concepts, trends, and technologies that focus on user collaboration, and sharing of usergenerated content. Some of these tools will be integrated into business courses. Parents, if you would like
more information on the specific tools that will be used in this course, please contact the teacher.
Needed Supplies:
1. Blue composition notebook (or a black and white one)
2. One box Kleenex
3. Blue or black pen & a pencil (no gel pens)
4. Earbuds for specific assignments
Student Expectations:
1. Students will be expected to obey all school district rules (as listed in the student handbook) as well as
specific classroom rules.
2. Students will be expected to bring their notebook and pencil or pen to class every day. (Please use
only blue or black ink pens--no gel pens.)
3. Students will be expected to contact the teacher the day they return from an absence to find out what
work they need to complete. See policy in student handbook regarding make-up work.
4. Homework is due on the date stated at the beginning of the class period.
5. Class participation is part of a student's grade; therefore students will be expected to participate in
all classroom activities and to work cooperatively with all members of the class.
6. Seek help from the teacher when needed.
Teacher Expectations:
1. Provide a classroom atmosphere conducive to learning for all students.
2. Provide information to students.
3. Return graded papers promptly.
4. Carry out all school district rules as stated in the student handbook.
5. Provide help to students. At the student's request, I will be available for extra help before or after
school when possible.
