INFORMATION ABOUT LACTULOSE ORAL SOLUTION
Medicines Names: Duphalac and Lactugal
Diagnosed: Constipation
Location of the treatment: Bowels Movement
Brief description:
This medication is a laxative used to treat constipation. It may help to increase the number of bowel
movements per day and the number of days you have a bowel movement. Lactulose is a colonic acidifier that
works by increasing stool water content and softening the stool. It is a man-made sugar solution.
Lactulose solution is a synthetic disaccharide, a type of sugar that is broken down in the large intestine into
mild acids that draw water into the colon, which helps soften the stools.
Benefits of Lactulose solution
This drug is used by mouth or
rectally to treat or prevent
complications of liver disease
(hepatic encephalopathy). It does
not cure the problem but may help
to improve mental status.
Lactulose is a colonic acidifier
that works by decreasing the
amount of ammonia in the blood.
It is a man-made sugar solution.
Side-effects of Lactulose solution
Side effects include:
Common side effects happen in more than 1 in 100 people. Talk to your
doctor or pharmacist if the side effects bother you or don't go away:





Bloating
Wind (farting and burping)
Feeling sick
Being sick (vomiting)
Stomach pain

Call 999 or go to A&E if: you get a skin rash that may include itchy, red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin,
you're wheezing you get tightness in the chest or throat, you have trouble breathing or talking, your mouth,
face, lips, tongue or throat start swelling. You could be having a serious allergic reaction and may need
immediate treatment in the hospital.
In rare cases, it's possible to have a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to Lactulose solution

Carers to always monitor clients health and inform the office of any changes in physical strength and general
condition overall. However, if the condition is to worsen, carers to call the emergency service (ambulance)
111/999 immediately inform the office of the situation.
