 A type of slang meant to confuse those who aren’t in the “know”
o A type of self-expression
 Associated with French hip-hop, rap, youth, children of immigrants
o Used in France, not Québec
o Developed in suburbs, poor communities in Paris
 Banlieue – suburb
o Stromae (verlan of “maestro”) is the name of a French music artist!
 L’envers  Verlan (L’envers = the inverse)
 Two syllables are flipped, and spelt the way they sound
o “Méchant” is pronounced “maychan,” so it is spelt “chanmé”
 Some verlan words have become so ubiquitous that they’ve appeared in
dictionaries
o Some words have becom re-verlan-ised!
o Meuf (Femme) has become so mainstream
 Guess the double verlan of meuf! (Answer: Femeu)
 Remember last lesson? “Un truc de ouf” is an example of the use of verlan.
o Fou (crazy)  Ouf :O
 Français  ??? (Answer : Céfran)
 Bizarre (strange)  ??? (Answer : Zarbi)
