Reading
Read the texts and mark the sentences T (True), F (False) or DS (doesn’t say).
Most of us complain about bad weather, but sometimes it can get more than a little hair-raising!
These people experienced some terrifying severe weather conditions …
Tornado on the football field
One Saturday last year, I was playing
goalkeeper in our football team’s last match of
the season. If I hadn’t been standing in the
goal, I wouldn’t have had such a perfect view
of the heavy thunderclouds moving towards
us! Soon, the first heavy raindrops were falling
and by half time the referee had stopped the
match as the lightning strikes were getting too
close.
As we waited by the side of the field, we
suddenly saw a small funnel forming at the
bottom of the clouds. Before we knew what
was happening, a tornado had touched down
on our football field! Everyone started running
in different directions in a panic. My dad and I
ran into a nearby field and lay flat in a ditch,
covering our heads with our hands. Football
bags, chairs and wet clothes were flying
everywhere. Then, suddenly the tornado
melted back into the sky. “Quick, if we go now,
we’ll make it to the car!” my dad shouted. We
were so relieved to find out later that everyone
at the match was safe! What an adventure!
Wild River Ride
One warm, sunny day at the end of last
summer, our family hired a little rowing boat
and went on a river trip through a canyon.
After a lazy morning swimming, having water
fights and relaxing on the river, suddenly we
heard thunder rumbling in the distance and
marble-sized hailstones and heavy rain
started to sting our skin! Soon after, muddy
water began to pour down the sides of the
canyon and rush into the river. It was a flash
flood! Before long, we weren’t in control of
the boat anymore as it raced down the river.
Then, my brother’s oar dropped into the
water! “If I were you, I’d hold on very tight!”
my dad told us. Down and down we raced,
with the boat rocking dangerously from side
to side. Then, just as soon as it had started,
the rain stopped, the sun appeared and the
river became calm again. With my dad’s one
oar, we somehow managed to row to the
nearby end of our route. “If we ever do this
again, we’ll check the weather forecast
before we leave!” my mum said, laughing.
