I.
Literal Level
Directions: After reading Chapter 5, check the items you believe to be True or
False, by placing either a T or an F in the space provided.
Example: T Squealer works for Napoleon.

II.
Interpretive Level
Directions: Several statements are listed below which may represent what the
thoughts of George Orwell. If you think any of the statements are reasonable
assumptions and conclusions, place an (X) on the smaller line provided. On the
additional lines, support your answer with evidence for the novel.
Example: X Snowball cares about the well-being of the other animals.
“Snowball conjured up pictures of fantastic machines which would do their
work for them whilst they grazed at ease in the fields or improved their
minds with reading and conversation.”

Applied Level
To apply what you read means to take information and ideas from what you have
read and connect it to what you already know. If you think the statements below
are supported by prior knowledge or study, place an (X) in the small space provided.
Be sure you have good reasons to justify your answers if called upon to do so.
Example: (X) Gullibility is a failure of social intelligence.
This aspect of the novel is clearly portrayed by the sheep, the dogs, and
Boxer, who represent the general public and the workforce. The Sheep are
quite possibly the most offending character to society because their
naïveté relates to everyone in the public, and anyone reading the book.
Firstly, they show ignorance when Napoleon and Snowball teach them
quite easily their "four legs good, two legs bad" phrase, even though they
do not quite understand what they're saying it.
