Uses of Tools and Equipment in Nail Care
and its Classification
according to Task Requirements
Definition of Terms:
Bevel - a term in manicuring and
pedicuring that means to shape the edge
of something
Dispose of - to throw away
Hygiene - the science concerned with
maintaining good health and cleanliness
Implements - articles or tools used in
manicuring that are durable
Infection - a condition caused by a germ
or a pathogen
Sterilization - a term referring to any
process that eliminates (removes) or kills
all forms of microbial life
Disinfectant - an agent, such as heat,
radiation, or a chemical, that destroys,
neutralizes, or prevents the growth of
disease-carrying microorganisms
Antiseptic - a substance, milder than a
disinfectant, that prevents the growth and
development of micro-organisms
Cuticle - the nonliving epidermis that
surrounds the edges of the fingernail or
toenail
Hand Spa - a beauty care service using
natural oils, vitamins, and minerals,
having curative effect to the body
Paraffin - a waxy white or colorless solid

diseases which can be acquired
by using unclean implements be

precautions and sanitary rules
and always wear the personal
protective equipment.

are the garments designed to
protect the wearer’s body from
injury or chemicals or for jobrelated occupational safety and

Safety Precautions and
Sanitary Procedures
1. Keep all containers covered
and labeled.
2. Hold or move containers with
dry hands.
3. Handle sharp-pointed
implements carefully and avoid
dropping them.
4. Dull over sharpened cutting
edges of sharp implements with
an emery board.
5. Bevel a sharp nail edge with
an emery board.
6. Do not file too deeply into the
nail corners.
7. Do not use a sharp, pointed
implement to cleanse under the
nail.
8. Apply an antiseptic
immediately if the skin is
accidentally cut.
9. Avoid pushing the cuticle
back too far.
10. Do not work on a nail when
the surrounding skin is inflamed
or is infected.
