2. Partial profiles
Background
Consider this quote from the Thompson article reviewing the relationship
between partial profiles and coincidental matches, starting on Page 4:
"Because partial profiles contain fewer genetic markers (alleles) than
complete profiles, they are more likely to match someone by chance. The
probability of a coincidental match is higher for a partial profile than for a full
profile."

Question
What effect do partial profiles have on the potential for a mismatch with the
incorrect suspect? Do you think that partial matches should be allowed to be
searched, or should the DNA evidence be thrown out altogether? A partial match
occurs when the DNA is of poor quality due to degradation. What are some
alternative DNA variants we learned about in the lecture and podcast that are
better suited for low quality, degraded DNA that might outperform traditional
autosomal STRs?
