Instruction: List five (5) qualities of a good teacher and then expound and reflect on each
of your answers.
“It’s the teacher that makes the difference, not the classroom.” – Michael
Morpurgo.
The teaching profession is never an easy job. It takes a lot of patience and
determination. Many are called, but few are chosen, and this is what symbolizes a
teacher. A teacher will never be a teacher if one has no passion for teaching. The teaching
profession offers endless opportunities to help all students comprehend, achieve their full
potential, and reach their goals in life to become successful. Students can be whoever
they want to be, such as becoming professional Doctors, Engineers, and Teachers
because of their knowledge while learning. The teaching profession also opens an
excellent opportunity for students to believe that education can change lives and
significantly impact the world. Without the presence of teachers, not every student will be
able to learn and explore the world of education. Teachers are indeed the ones who make
a big difference in student’s life. They inspire students to push beyond their limits and be
whoever they want to be as long as they become the best version of themselves.
However, there is no such thing as a perfect teacher. Teachers are also humans, they
make mistakes, and they are not capable of everything. However, teachers can surpass
this challenge if they have the potent qualities of excellent teachers.
For me, the five qualities of an excellent teacher that I choose are the following:
 Has a deep knowledge and understanding of the subject matter.
 Has a commitment to teaching and is hard-working.
 Has a strong passion for subject.
 Is an inspirational role model to students.
 Is eminently approachable.
These qualities will let the teachers feel that they are almost perfect if they can apply
them. Teachers will surely become effective and efficient educators if they live into these
qualities. Let me start elaborating on these qualities of an excellent teacher to become
one of them. Since I was still young, my ultimate dream has been to become a teacher
like my mom because I have seen that she’s so passionate and dedicated in her career.
So, I am here fulfilling the dream that I wanted to become. The first quality of an excellent
teacher is having deep knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. There is a
saying that a teacher is only as good as their knowledge. If a teacher isn’t well-versed in
a subject, the students will suffer as a result. In addition, it is essential to keep in mind
that formal schooling is only one method for teachers to acquire the knowledge they need
to be successful in the classroom. This also means that teachers should have a high level
of expertise in the subjects they teach and devote a significant amount of time to furthering
their education. They motivate their students to learn more on their own by
enthusiastically presenting the information. As a future teacher, it is a reminder that
passion spreads like wildfire. A person’s love for a subject motivates them to study more
about it, delve more profound, and think more critically about it. The best teachers are
those who genuinely care about what they are teaching and who can transmit that
enthusiasm to their students. As long as the instructor knows the answer and has
examples, humorous anecdotes, and pertinent information to add to the lesson plan,
students will benefit from the instructor’s vast knowledge base by being motivated to
pursue their interests and passions in the subject matter.
Second, an excellent teacher commits to teaching and is hard working. This means
that teachers should have a deep dedication to their profession because they are the
ones who will bring students to success. It is a big challenge for the teachers to be
committed to their work because they should never complain about whatever tasks they
give. They should be willing to give out their time for leisure to help students who are
having a hard time. They should be flexible and adaptable to whatever circumstances
they are in, especially when teachers are placed into remote areas where transportation,
communication, and the internet are difficult. Teachers should have the determination and
hard work to teach students what they deserve even though they are experiencing a lack
of resources. As a future teacher, I know it is hard to be placed in remote areas, but
nothing is impossible when I have the commitment and hard work. I can innovate,
improve, and create materials and resources for my students. It will not hinder teaching
them in-depth knowledge and information about the world we live in. I also need to be
flexible to help my students become lifelong learners, and most importantly, I am willing
to give up my time for them if they need help.
The third quality of an excellent teacher is having a strong passion for the subject.
This means that an excellent teacher should be passionate about her subject. This is
because it is only through this process that pupils will experience their enthusiasm and
dedication. When a teacher works diligently for his or her students, the kids will
reciprocate. If a teacher is dissatisfied with her job and arrives at class with a foul attitude,
her teaching will suffer, and pupils will not enjoy lessons. When a teacher loves his/her
subject, it will be more meaningful to students. The lessons and values they have learned
will be forever in their hearts and minds as well as they will serve as their inspiration to
conquer their fears and achieve their dreams in life. For me, a quote from Sandra Scheier
reminds me to be passionate at all because this is what she said, “Love what you teach,
and they will love it too.” It clearly states that I should remember the excitement because
that enthusiasm can guide my students towards a beautiful and meaningful career path.
My love for teaching the subject I teach can help my students be motivated and engage
in learning. It will also give the students the fuel to boost their full potential in learning the
subject. As a result of enthusiastic teaching, pupils take their studies more seriously.
Teaching becomes more than just a job when it becomes a source of motivation for the
pupils. Among other things, it promotes active learning and fosters intellectual and moral
growth. Students’ learning improves dramatically when teachers have a love for their
work. A student’s progress and future depend on the quality of their teachers; thus, we
may conclude that passionate teachers are essential.
The fourth quality of an excellent teacher is an inspirational role model to students.
We all know that our teachers are our role models. They inspire and motivate us every
day to ensure that we learn and engage with new concepts. We consider our teachers as
our second mother or father, and we are blessed to have them in our life because they
make us feel secure and belong no matter what. Students that make mistakes are taught
a lesson and made aware of their wrongdoing by their teacher. They instill in us the value
of personal hygiene, a good diet, avoiding unhealthy foods, taking care of one’s parents,
treating others with respect, and the necessity of finishing tasks. The teacher has the
power to shape both the present and the future of her students. He also contributes to a
better society by raising a child that succeeds academically for the rest of his life. When
teachers inspire students to do their best, they are excellent educators. To be an ethical
and virtuous teacher, one must make a lasting impact on a student’s life and help them
develop the character traits necessary to succeed in the world.
Every day, teachers have a profound effect on our lives. With each new day that
passes, they teach us something new that we may apply to every decision in our life.
Fortunately, I had a teacher who believed in me and pushed me to my absolute
boundaries. And that made me who I am today. Without my teachers, who taught me
everything, I think I can’t be the best version of myself. Without my mom, I would never
aim to be a teacher, and she taught me that I must not aim for a high salary when teaching,
but I should think that teaching is a service. God calls me to serve people, especially
those in need, and I am willing to fulfill everything with His grace.
Lastly, an excellent teacher is eminently approachable. This means that teachers
should be friendly, approachable, and respectful to students. However, teachers should
set boundaries so that students will still respect their teachers even though they build
friendships. It is also essential that teachers are there for students, especially when they
have problems. They can talk to teachers, and they can also express their feelings and
emotions. In my opinion, a good teacher can form strong bonds with their students by
being an approachable figure in the classroom. I believe that my most memorable and
respected teacher encouraged me to approach them with any issues or questions that I
had and constantly pushed me to do my best in the classroom. I built a positive working
relationship with my teacher thanks to this kind gesture of reassurance and kindness.
A professional educator is constantly developing and learning. They are on a
constant quest for new ideas or teaching methods, ways to enhance their abilities, or new
knowledge that will assist their pupils in succeeding. Therefore, I must take the time to
assess my skills and expertise as a professional educator so that I will be able to grow as
a teacher. The goals that I have for myself are to assist my students in reaching their
goals, and I will reach them by providing personal growth for myself as well. My attitudes
towards teaching and learning changed over time to make me perceive failures as a
striving lesson to make myself a better teacher. As a result, I may learn new significant
and relevant skills by learning my lessons from my past mistakes, which leads me to
become the best teacher that I can be.
