Should I join a travel basketball team?
Costs
Benefit
I wouldn't have much free time. (short-term)
I would be spending more time playing
basketball (short-term)
The sport might interfere with work. (short-term)
I would be looked at by college coaches.
(long-term)
I would need to be willing to spend money on the
team. (long-term)
I would get physically stronger.
(long-term)
1. Explain how the concepts of scarcity, choice, and opportunity cost relate to your
dilemma. There are a lot of time scarcities in this choice because I would have no free
time other than the summer and even then it will be packed. From coming from school,
getting dressed for work and going to work, coming home at 11 and doing this the whole
week until the weekend where basketball will come into play.
2. When making a decision, are the costs and benefits equally important to you? Why or
why not. Based on your chart, explain which category, costs or benefits, would have the
largest impact on your decision? No, I really look at the benefits for myself when making
decisions because if I can handle it in my schedule and it truly benefits me, then there's
no reason I can not do it. Alternatively, in this scenario, I would value costs because the
job is getting me money and I wouldn't give that up for basketball.
3. Based on the chart and your responses to the above questions, what will be your final
choice? Write a brief paragraph with at least three details to persuade your instructor that
this is the best decision. My final choice will be to not join the team. I choose this
because I think even right now, I am hard pressed with time during the school week and I
do not want any other paths of stress as my school is very rigorous. I also do not want to
spend money on plane fares, drives, away from home when I am with the team because
I plan on saving money to buy a car.
