3B orthopaedics model vs. typical procedures performed
by the faculty practice surgeons.
• Which is the better?
• As a teaching hospital, Rittenhouse Medical Center (RMC) should offer a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic
services to conduct comprehensive teaching and research. Based on these key criteria, in my opinion, typical
procedures performed by the faculty practice surgeons is better.
• “Operation-within-an-operation” concept
• “Operation-within-an-operation” concept applies to 3B orthopaedics model (3B Ortho) because they have
separated staff, rooms, tools and procedures. 3B Ortho contributed to 22% of net revenue of RMC. As explained
by one administrator in the article: “Very few hospitals have a single practice with that much weight. When Booth
and a couple of his partners are not working, or are on vacation, you notice a lot fewer people as you walk around
the hospital.”
• Dabhilkar and Svarts’ dimensions
• All dimensions of focus are relevant for the case. The evolution of 3B Ortho aimed to reduce the problem and
solve it with better options so that they could operate more efficiently without sacrificing the quality of care.
