Biomes
Facts About Biomes
• A Biome is a region of Earth where the climate determines the types
of plants that live there.
• Climate is the main abiotic factor that characterizes a biome.
• Abiotic factors affect which organisms can live in a biome.
• Plants and animals that live in a biome have adaptations to its unique
conditions

What its Dallas Climate?
• The city of Dallas has a humid
subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification: Cfa)
• that is characteristic of the Southern Plains of the United States.
• Dallas experiences distinct four seasons with mild winters and hot
summers.

• Savanna
• Rainforest
• Deciduous forest
• Taiga
• Tundra

Fresh water
Tundra
• is found in the Arctic and in high mountains. The ground contains
permafrost and the biome has low temperatures and very little
precipitation. The plants have shallow roots and animals migrate or
grow thick fur
Taiga/Coniferous
forest
• is found in Canada, Northern Europe and
Asia.
• Temperatures stay low but there is more
precipitation than the tundra.
• Taiga trees are coniferous (evergreens) and
animals migrate, hibernate, or go through fur
changes each season. Also called boreal
forest
Deciduous forests
• have moderate precipitation, hot summers and cold winters.
• The trees shed their leaves and go dormant in the winter.
• Some animals hibernate, some of the birds migrate out in winter and
others stay year round
Grassland
• Description:
• Grasslands are generally open and continuous, fairly flat areas of grass.
• They are often located between temperate forests at high latitudes and deserts at
subtropical latitudes
• Key characteristics of the grassland biome:
•
•
•
•
•
Vegetation structure that is dominated by grasses.
Semi-arid climate.
Rainfall and soils insufficient to support significant tree growth.
Most common at mid-latitudes and near the interiors of continents.
Grasslands are often exploited for agricultural use.
Desert
• Deserts are characterized by low humidity (air moisture), low annual
rainfall, and an overall moisture deficit, meaning the rate of evaporation
exceeds the rate of rainfall on average.
• Deserts are also characterized by extreme temperatures and low fauna and
flora
ACP check
• If a grassland suffers severe drought as a result of temperature
increases and a decrease in precipitation over a long period of time,
which biome does it most closely resemble?
A Savanna
B Tundra
C Desert
D Woodland
