The marketing mix is often summarized as the so-called four Ps: product, price, place, promotion
– what to sell, to whom, where, and with what support. Some commentators will increase the
marketing mix to “the five Ps”, to include people. One more P, packaging has been added to this
list by some people.
Product: this aspect of marketing deals with the specifications of the goods or services and how
they relate to the end user’s needs and wants. In marketing, a product is anything that can be
offered to a market that might satisfy a want or a need. However, it is much more than just a
physical object. It is the complete bundle of benefits that the buyers perceive they will obtain if
they purchase this product. Goods are things to be sold. Fast moving consumer goods (FMCGs)
are inexpensive products that people usually buy on a regular basis, such as supermarket foods.
White goods are such things as washing machines and refrigerators. Brown goods are things such
as televisions. Services are activities such as banking, tourism or entertainment. Products have a
life cycle, and forward-thinking companies are continually developing new products to replace
products whose sales are declining and coming to the end of their lives. Products exist in different
models. Some are basic, others are more sophisticated. The cheapest skis are low-end or bottomend. The most expensive are high-end or top-end. If you buy sophisticated skis to replace basic
ones you move upmarket. If you buy cheaper skis after buying more expensive ones you move
downmarket. New products are introduced or launched onto the market.
