ASSUMPTION 5: MANAGERS NEED ONLY TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO
USE AN INFORMATION SYSTEM
I disagree with this assumption that managers need only to understand how to use an information
system and not how it works. Understanding not only how to use information systems but also
how the overall information system works will help managers to implement the best the
information system in their organization which will save time and money for the organization.
Since large organization will have customized information systems, it will be beneficial for
managers to understand how their information systems work since the managers can clearly
communicate with information system developers to build more effective information systems
and evaluate the information systems before implementing it in their organization. Below I have
found a real-life example to support my claim that managers also need to understand how
information system works and not only how to use them
Real Life Example
According to an article, management’s ignorance of information systems can lead to business
failures since every organization’s requirement for information systems will not be the same and
managers need to understand the requirements of their organization to implement information
systems, like Banca di Roma, a bank based in Italy failed its merger with three banks because
managers of Banca di Roma could not integrate their information systems with the other three
banks. Managers of Banca di Roma assumed of information systems only as a utility that could
be unplugged from organization and plugged into another organization without any
customizations and properly evaluating the feasibility of integration of one organization’s
information systems with another organization and as a result due management’s lack of
understanding how information system works the merger between Banca di Roma and other
three banks has failed (UMSL, n.d.).
