Understanding the Self
REPORT: Do a research and list at least ten (10) things to boost your self-esteem or to
improve your self-concept.
What is self-esteem?
Self-esteem refers to a person’s overall sense of his or her value or worth. It can be
considered a sort of measure of how much a person “values, approves of, appreciates,
prizes, or likes him or herself” (Adler & Stewart, 2004).
According to my research, the following are things you can do to improve your self-esteem
or self-concept:
1. Have a positive attitude
To be able to accomplish anything in life, we must first believe in ourselves,
that we are capable of amazing things, and that it is not only possible but also likely
that we will. You are halfway to overcoming your own self-doubts if you can identify
the source of them.
2. Get up and get moving
We must accept that we will never be able to do anything well unless we
are forced to. So, even if you have a job, take a few minutes to go for a walk or join
an exercise class, and then sit back and relax for a while.
3. Don't be ashamed to talk to friends
Although we may consider it impolite to do so, it is critical that we speak to
people who we believe will listen to us. This way, we can get feedback on how
we're doing, and if anyone tells us that we do have something to learn, it's our turn
to try to improve.
4. Do something with a purpose
This may seem obvious, but many of us end up doing things solely for the
thrill of doing something different and trying something new. Even if it is as simple
as doing your weekly shopping or going for a drive, participating in something for
a purpose is far more beneficial than simply going along for the ride.
5. Listen to your body
When we are attempting to boost our self-esteem, we often place too much
emphasis on our outward appearance rather than the inside of our bodies.
However, the truth is that the entirety of our being is contained within us, and it is
critical to accept this rather than being concerned with our outward appearance.
6. Put things off until the next day
The issue is that when we complete tasks early on, we tend to forget about
them later, and it takes a lot longer to complete them later. So, try to plan
everything ahead of time so you don't have to work so hard.
7. Make sure you eat right
Remember that eating the right foods makes us feel good about ourselves
because it gives us energy and ensures that we are prepared for whatever comes
our way. It is also important to remember that it is very easy to give up when we
are feeling down, but when we eat healthy food, we ensure that we are full, which
gives us more energy and helps to boost our self-esteem.
8. Set time aside for yourself
Setting aside time for ourselves is one of the best ways to boost our selfesteem; this is not only a time for doing something different, but it is also a time for
us to enjoy some alone time. It can be an ice breaker, a time when we get together
with our friends or family, or even a time when we get some alone time to reflect.
9. Write down your goals
You must set goals for yourself if you want to improve your self-esteem.
Whether you want to lose weight, quit smoking, or be more successful at work, you
must set short and attainable goals in order to stay motivated. Remember, this is
your life, and you can't do it all at once; it takes consistent effort and a long-term
strategy.
10. Have fun!
Remember, it's all about having fun, and having fun is one of the best ways
to boost your self-esteem.
If we can manage these ten ways to boost self-esteem, we will be well on our way to
making a positive difference in our lives. We must first change our thoughts and beliefs
about ourselves, but then all we need to do is act.
