Hi! My name’s Ethan and I’m fourteen. I’m from London like
my mum and dad, but my grandparents are from Jamaica. I’m
into chess and music. I love hip hop and rap. I can write songs
and they’re not bad.
Grace:
Hello! I’m Grace and I’m fifteen years old. I’m a Londoner, but
my parents aren’t. My dad’s Turkish and my mum’s Irish. I can
speak Turkish and English. My interests? I like dancing and
I’m really interested in sport. Chelsea is my favourite team.
Lydia:
My name’s Lydia. I’m fourteen and I’m from London. My
dad’s a Londoner, but my mum’s Polish. My brother, Joe, and I
can speak Polish, but our dad can’t. What am I into? My hobby
is photography and I have got a lot of old cameras. I’m
interested in art too, but I’m not very good at drawing.
Rory:
I’m Rory and I’m fourteen. I’m a Londoner too, but my parents
are from Scotland. I’m into science and technology – I like
computers and I’ve got lots of computer games. I’m also into
music and I can mix songs on my computer.

Gandhi was born in India in 1869. Parents usually chose a wife
for boys when they were very young. Gandhi got married in
New Challenges 2 Tests Audioscript
1883 to Kasturba, a fourteen-year-old girl. Their marriage
lasted over fifty years and they had four children.
In 1888 Gandhi went to London to study law. He graduated
successfully and in 1891 returned to India. He worked as a
lawyer, and in 1893 went to work in South Africa. In South
Africa he first saw discrimination against the Indian and black
population. Gandhi protested against this discrimination, but it
was always non-violent protest. He was put in prison for
organising the protests.
In 1915 Gandhi returned to India. India was a British colony
then. Gandhi began his campaign of ‘civil disobedience’ and
non-violent protest against the British. He wanted
independence for India, but in 1922 he went to prison again,
this time for two years.
When the Second World War started in 1939, Gandhi wanted
Indian independence in return for helping Britain in the war.
After the war, India finally became an independent country in
1947. However, Gandhi was shot in 1948 when he was walking
in his garden.

Hi, Jenny. How are you?
Fine thanks, Harry. Hey! Did you see the horror film last night?
Do you mean Ghost Story? Yes, I did. I thought it was brilliant.
Really? I thought it was stupid. I can’t stand films like that.
So why did you watch it?
My sister wanted to see it. She thought it was really scary.
What kind of films do you like, then?
I like stories about aliens and UFOs. They’re exciting. But they’re not
true, so I don’t get scared. Close Encounters is good. It was on TV the
other night. Did you see it?
No, I didn’t. Well, I saw the first ten minutes. I don’t really like that
kind of film.
Why? Do you think it’s stupid?
No, not stupid. But it’s old. The little boy in that film is probably a
grandfather now. I don’t like watching films when I know the story –
when I know what happens. Anyway, I like horror films.
I don’t. They’re too scary.
No, they aren’t! They’re so stupid, you can’t really believe in them.
They’re just funny.

I’m Jonathan. I don’t work every day, but when I have a job I usually get up late and
try to have a relaxing day, because it’s very tiring. I go to the theatre about five. I put
on my costume before the make-up people start on me. It takes a long time. The play
starts at 7.30 and finishes three hours later. I get home at about one in the morning,
but then it’s difficult to sleep.
2
I’m Emma and I’ve got a fantastic job. I love everything about it. I love wearing the
crazy clothes and crazy make-up. I love doing tricks and throwing water around. Most
of all, I love making kids laugh.
3
My name’s Steve and I’m a student, really. This is a weekend job. I’m a Roman
soldier. I always stand in the same place. It’s in a very busy street and there are
always a lot of people everywhere. I usually get quite a lot of money. One time, a
little girl tried to push me off the box. But usually the kids are nicer than that.
4
My name’s Marion. My job is quite unusual, really. I often go into schools. I usually
work with young children, but sometimes I go into secondary schools, too. I also
work in libraries, usually on Saturday mornings. Sometimes I go to children’s parties.
The children are usually noisy and excited at the beginning, then they get quieter and
quieter and start to listen. It’s wonderful.

Interviewer:
What does your sister look like?
Boy:
Well, she’s got long, curly, brown hair. She’s got brown eyes
and she wears glasses. She’s older than me – she’s sixteen.
2
Interviewer:
What does your boyfriend look like?
Girl:
Er, well, I think he’s good-looking. He’s got black hair and big,
brown eyes. He’s got a long nose and face. He’s eighteen, a
year older than me.
3
Interviewer:
What does your girlfriend look like?
Boy:
Well, I haven’t got a regular girlfriend, but I sometimes go out
with Natalie. She’s slim and she’s got long, straight hair. She’s
blond. She’s got blue eyes. She wears braces.
4
Interviewer:
What does your brother look like?
Girl:
He’s fourteen. He’s got dark hair and brown eyes. He’s a bit
plump, I suppose. He’s got a great smile!
5
Interviewer:
What does your best friend look like?

Boy:
He’s really tall for his age. He’s got short brown hair and
brown eyes. He’s a great basketball player.

Interviewer:

Girl:
She’s a year younger than me, that’s sixteen. She’s quite slim.
She’s very pretty, I think. She’s got long, red hair and brown
eyes. She always wears earrings and often borrows mine!

Woman:
Good morning. Can I help you?
Man:
Yes, I’d like some information about tickets for a theatre tour,
please.
Woman:
Certainly. Adult tickets are ten pounds fifty and for children
under fifteen years old, it’s six pounds fifty. And if you see a
play, there’s a two pound discount.
Man:
No, we aren’t going to see a play. We just want to do the tour.
Woman:
That’s okay. Have you got any children under five years old?
Man:
Yes, we have, actually.
Woman:
Well, it’s free for them.
Man:
So we don’t have to pay for our three-year-old. That’s good!
Sorry, I didn’t write the prices down; can you repeat them,
please?
Woman:
Of course: ten pounds fifty for adults, six pounds fifty for
children aged five to fifteen.
Man:
Ten pounds fifty ... six pounds fifty. And free for children
under five. Do we need to book?
Woman:
For groups of fewer than fifteen people, you don’t need to
book.
Man:
No, we’re not a big group so that’s okay. And, er, we’d like to
come early. What time do the tours start?
Woman:
At nine thirty every day of the week.
Man:
Half past nine, seven days a week.
Woman:
That’s right.
Man:
Just one more question: we’ll probably get the bus. Which
buses stop near the theatre?
Woman:
There are lots ... let me see ... numbers forty-five, sixty-three,
one hundred ...
Man:
That’s plenty, thanks! And thank you for all your help.
Woman:
Not at all.

We had a great time last summer. We went to Cornwall. That’s
in the south west of England. We stayed at a campsite near the
beach. The campsite was okay. We went to the beach almost
every day. I played beach volleyball with my brother and my
dad. Some days we went snorkelling. That was great fun and
we saw some amazing fish!

Girl:
I had a good time last summer. We went to stay with my uncle.
He’s got a house in Spain. It’s in the mountains near Madrid.
The weather was great, as usual. There’s a swimming pool near
his house and we went swimming almost every day. It rained
on a couple of days and we went sightseeing in Madrid.
3
Girl:
We didn’t go away last summer. We stayed at home. I live in a
village in Norfolk – that’s in the east of England. It’s a great
place! My sister and I did lots of different things. It was hot so
we went swimming in the river a lot. It was great, but the water
was very cold! We also went cycling in the woods. There are
some amazing woods near here!
