1. Write back and forth to them
The students will be able to have time each day to write in a journal, they can use the
prompt given or write freely. This is something that could be kept to just them or they can hand it
in to the teacher for the chance for the teacher to respond. The teacher may respond to the
student, or they may wish to keep it to themselves. I will model what this writing prompt may
include and write a letter to the students. I believe that the student’s feeling heard is a great way
to prevent misbehavior. Many times in my classroom the students want to tell me about their
lives, but sometimes I just don’t have time to hear all of the students. This gives the child their
time to express themselves and the teacher to create a meaningful response. This will give them
an outlet to tell the teacher about their lives, and they could also share something about the
classroom or their peers that they want to share with the teacher.
2. Dedicated student bulletin boards
`The students will be able to give the teacher pieces of their work that they are proud of
in order to display within the classroom for all of the students to admire. This may also be the
bulletin board that the classroom star student is displayed on. This sort of practice gives the
students a sense of pride in their work, as well as a safe community in which they are able to
celebrate their accomplishments. I will model this by portraying myself as the first-star student
where they will be able to display some pictures of themselves and fill out a template of all of
their favorite things. This will improve behavior because the students may want to focus better so
that they will be able to be proud of the work that they do in order to display it on this bulletin
board. Star Student can also be chosen based on the behaviors in the classroom; therefore,
students will want to work towards earning that title for the week.
3. ·Have students create rules/consequences
On the first day of school students will have the opportunity to create and review
rules/consequences with the teacher. Both the teacher and students will have the chance to give
their input on which rules are appropriate. Students will each write down a rule on an index card
and give them to me, I will read aloud each card to the class and see what the group as a whole
feels about it. As long as the rule is appropriate in all needed areas, it will be added to the list,
keeping in mind we can not create too many rules. Allowing students the chance to be involved
in creating the rules/consequences for the classroom gives them a sense of belonging in the
classroom as well as independence since they are given the chance to create the rules for
themselves. This also gives the opportunity for the teacher to be able to defend the rules later in
the year because the teacher can say they created the rules together for our classroom.
4. Honor and Celebrate Birthdays
When a student’s birthday is upon us I, as the teacher, will make every effort to celebrate
these occasions to the fullest extent. Celebrations of this nature foster a cohesive classroom
environment and ensure students feel welcomed. Some students may not celebrate their birthday
at home due to financial reasons and therefore I want to celebrate with them as much as possible.
I will model this by allowing the students to select a special activity we can do in class such as a
dance party, game (Simon says, 7-up or who’s missing), special snack, or storytime. I will also
allow students to pick from a designated birthday prize bin and give them a crown. Celebrations
of this nature allow students to feel loved and appreciated. I will also be sure to celebrate those
students who have summer birthdays on their half birthdays. I know students who are born in the
summer often feel left out during classroom celebrations and I want to avoid that at all costs. By
celebrating birthdays in the classroom students will feel appreciated and accepted; this may also
be the only time they are celebrated and therefore I want to make the most of it!
5. Have a student of the week/day.
The students will have an opportunity to shine. A student will be chosen weekly based on
effort, good attendance, behavior, attitude toward others, and character through compassion,
honesty, and responsibility. The teacher will have a bulletin board in an area for all to see where
the student of the week's photo will be posted. Around the photo, there will be decorations or
photos pertaining to some of the student’s favorite things. This allows for the child to be
recognized by his fellow classmates for all the hard work he or she has done to earn this. The
student will have the chance to share some of his favorite things, gain some special treatment and
also be the teacher's helper for the week. The teacher will use it with the students as behavior
management and or a reachable goal for them. Each week a new student will be chosen to give
every student an opportunity to get better in the necessary departments. This helps prevent
misbehavior because the student would want to work very hard in order to get recognized as well
as receive all the perks that go along with it. For example, getting to share some fun facts about
themselves and their favorite things. No homework 2 days out of their week. Be the teacher’s
helper whether that be giving a message to another teacher, passing out papers, taking the lunch
count, etc.
