Rock Research Assignment
Rock Research Assignment
Rocks and Minerals are all around us. They are
necessary for life, they are part of the walls in the
school, they help heat our houses and provide us
with clean drinking water.
But what are they? Where do they come from?
What do
they really look like? How do we get them? What
are they worth?
Rock Research Assignment
You will research an example of one type of rock to gain a better understanding of the
specific characteristics of it. You will either create a poster , or collect your research and
put it in a duotang. This is a creative research project so add pictures, etc.
Your rock example should include:
1.
Title of your project
2.
Name of specific rock (ex: slate, limestone, basalt, etc.)
3.
Physical properties and composition ( size, color, lusture, elements and minerals
included, texture, etc.)
4. Where in the world is this rock found?
5. Is this rock used for any practical application by humans?
6. A picture of your specific rock .
7.
If possible, sample of your chosen rock.
8.

Grain size: medium grained ( the
calcite crystals are visible with the
naked eye)
Minerals: Calcite
Texture: small grains/particlesgranular
Color: there are all kinds of marble,
but pure pure marble is white.
Marble is a Metamorphic rock it is formed when
Limestone is exposed to heat—— That’s when
Marble appears. Generally Marble contains other
minerals too like quartz, iron, etc.
This rock can be found just about
everywhere- US, India, Spain, etc
Marble can be found in your counters,
tables,outdoor furniture, etc
Example:
Marble

texture. It contains minerals such as, quartz, graphite, calcite, and
iron oxides.
● The Density of the rock is 2.11 grams per centimeter.
● The rock isn’t heavy but it isn’t light.
● The rock comes from Limestone or Dolomite
● FORMS- When Limestone is subjected to the heat and pressure of
Metamorphic.
● marble is non-foliated so it does not have a banded or layered
