Drug action:
Acts on blood vessels, GI, and respiratory
system by blocking histamine, which
decreases allergic response.
Calculation of dose:
Side effects:
dizziness, drowsiness, narcoleptic malignant
syndrome, constipation, urinary retention,
thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis,
hemolytic anemia, apnea in neonates, infants,
young children.

12.5 mg qid or 25 mg hs.

Nursing Implications:
Assess I&O ratio, CBC, respiratory status,
and cardiac status. Administer with meals.
Provide hard candy for mouth dryness.
Patient’s response to drug:
Contraindications:
acute asthma attack, lower respiratory tract
disease, sulfite allergy.
Teaching:
drug may cause photosensitivity. Notify
prescriber if confusion, sedation, or
hypotension occurs. Avoid driving and
alcohol. Medication may increase the
likelihood of falls
