Human Behaviour in
Organsation.

Rationale
 Business leaders face the challenge of preventing their organisations from becoming very
bureaucratic.
 In recent times, the mantra is to flatten the hierarchy in order to empower the workforce
and get decisions made faster.
Cut Middle Management.
 Cost: high overhead cost to employ managers.
 Effective Communication: it undermines effective communication between top
management/executives and frontline staff who are usually first to receive info. Mid
managers edit info to suit them before sending to superior
 Employee Empowerment: it makes the subordinates powerless even within their JD/
jurisdiction
Don’t Cut Mid-Management
• Link: they are the link between mission and execution, they turn strategy into action, they get
everyone in same page.
• Workload on Management: While communication is good from frontline staff directly to
management, it also increases number of direct report per manager, causing stress.
• Solution Giver: Conflict resolution, Prompt Decision Making and Coach to junior employees
• Risky Promotion: without direct supervision, low level staff have zero knowledge on
managerial skills and the shoe too big to fill
• Lower Morale: the remaining mid-managers have lower commitment and reluctance to
accept responsibility. They feel devalued.
