ARTIST WHEEL
The Vocabulary of Colour
• Three Dimensions of a colour are;
• 1. Hue= the name of a colour : red, blue etc
• 2. Value = refers to the relative lightness or
darkness of a hue / colour
• 3. Saturation / (chroma) =intensity or maximum
chroma of the hue ( the strongest possible
manifestation of that colour ) .
• All pure hues are fully saturated .
• A saturated hue contains one or two primary
colours but not a third .
The Vocabulary of Colour
• Chroma is a synonym for HUE
• It is a part of familiar colour words
such as :
•
-Chromatic
• - Achromatic
• - Polychromatic
• - Monochromatic
Hue
Chromatic :
having colour /
hue i.e., blue
versus having
no colour ;
black.
Hue
• Achromatic: without
colour i.e black or
white or ,grey.
Hue
• Polychromatic: having many hues
Hue
• Monochromatic: having a single
hue and variations of that hue
Tint/Shade
(adjusting value to a colour )
• Only occasionally are colours used in their
full saturation.
• Hues are typically diluted making them
lighter or darker in value .
• Simplest way to do this is:
• - adding white making it lighter = tint
• -adding black making it darker = shade
