Social media is one of the most effective and efficient ways to communicate. Twitter, Facebook,
Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Youtube, and Tiktok are examples of social media sites. These
sites give us the opportunity to connect with family and friends. Today, many people are glued
to their electronic devices and use their free time to go online to post and report pictures, create
videos, play games and chat with others. I believe over time social media can begin to affect
people’s lives negatively.
According to Amazing Social Media Statistics and Facts, there are 3.725 billion active social
media users and on average, each user having 7.6 social media accounts. The average daily
time spent on social media is 142 minutes a day. Some people are most happy sharing on
social media what they care about, every activity or picture they take. Many social media sites
also offer to play games. These games are all addictive since the goal is to get the highest
score. Did you know that companies spend an estimated $90 billion on social network
advertising in 2019? No wonder social media addiction is steadily increasing. When you start
living your life on social media and isolate from others, this is concerning.
It is important to identify social media addiction before it takes over your life. Addiction is when
people start to spend more and more time on social media and forget about everything else.
Some signs include low productivity, lost of interest, lack of concentration and stress/anxiety.
Some ways one can reduce addiction includes limiting time, stop notifications, delete the app,
spend time with family and friends and do your favorite activities.
Social media addiction is a big problem. To live a happy and healthy find a balance that works
for you. Social media sites were designed to keep society connected but ironically it is in fact
cutting them off from society.
