At the end of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” what unanswered questions
did you have?
1. Did Ichabod actually die?
2. What happens to Brom?
3. What happens to Katrina and the Van Tassels?
4. Does the Headless Horseman keep terrorizing the town?
5. Who is the new schoolmaster at the schoolhouse?
Write an Epilogue that answers all of your questions …
“The Rest of the Story”
By Jackson Wilkinson
10 years later...
The Van Tassels had another party/get-together at their house to
“celebrate” the 10 year anniversary of Ichabod’s death. Almost everyone from the
town came over, something that shocked the Van Tassels. One notable exception
was Brom Bones, who was in prison for supposedly killing Ichabod. That’s right:
Brom Bones was the one wearing the pumpkin mask and the one who chased
(and eventually killed) Ichabod. At the party, there were drinks, board games (that
they had back in the 1800’s) and a sitting arrangement where they talked about life.
After Ichabod’s death, Katrina was heartbroken. “Why, oh why, did he have
to go on that horse ride?” She cried out.
Her and the Van Tassels as a whole were still fine in the end, even though
they didn't think so.
As for the schoolhouse, it needed a new schoolmaster and didn’t get one until
now. Someone by the name of Peter van Bijk (another Dutchman) took over the
role of schoolmaster, and the students were delighted that they had a new one.
Brom Bones got arrested for the murder of Ichabod. He denied any
wrongdoing, but the police didn’t buy it. The jury sentenced him to life in prison with
a minimum of 20 years. That arrest removed someone who was once a hero in
the community, but showed his true colors that night.
After Brom’s arrest, Sleepy Hollow thought of making (in secret, obviously) a
new Headless Horseman to keep the story around. The community, now knowing
there was someone behind the pumpkin head, were strongly against that, and so
was the Town Council. By a landslide, the plan was outlawed.
Ichabod’s son, Adrian, vowed to become the new schoolmaster, taking the
position of his father. Van Bijk and him actually held an election by the students,
which, as stated earlier, van Bijk won.
For the rest of the Crane family, they grieved the loss of their
father/husband for all of those 10 years. Even after that time, they still wouldn’t let
the newspapers have them as interviewees. They kept this a secret to Adrian,
who thought his dad just retired and moved to somewhere unknown. It was good for
him, and the students, that he didn’t know the truth...
Overall, Sleepy Hollow suffered a pretty big loss, but in the end, the town
was fine. Over the next couple years, the town went back to normal. Schoolkids
had school, and they liked Schoolmaster van Bijk. The Van Tassels kept their
riches, passing them down to Katrina. The only things missing were a Headless
Horseman terrorizing Sleepy Hollow, and Brom Bones. The town overall got much
better without a Headless Horseman attacking it...
