5 READING: Ben’s day.
When I woke up this morning, I found my dog, Fox, waiting for me.
He wanted me to take him for a walk. I was too hungry, so first I
had breakfast. I had a glass of milk and a piece of toast. Then I
washed my teeth and put on a track-suit and a heavy coat,
because it was really cold outside. Fox was already impatient. We
both went out, and walked to the park near home. He ran and
jumped, and pursued some passers-by. He also destroyed some
pieces of furniture somebody left on the road. I sat on a bench all
the time, wishing I could be inside my warm bed. When my hands
were frozen, I decided it was time to go back home. Fox didn’t
want to, but I pulled hard and I managed to take him back. When
we arrived at the front door, I realized I didn’t have my keys with
me, so we stayed out in the cold for more than an hour! Fox was
happy, but I was late for work!
Answer the following questions:
1 Who was happy to stay outside?

7 READING: TV Rules!
TV Heaven Magazine met the Carlyle family from New York to discuss
their TV watching habits.
TV Heaven: How much time do you spend watching TV, as a family?
Stan: We watch a lot of TV. We love it.
TV Heaven: What about in the morning?
Stan: In the morning my two children, Paul and Hazel, usually watch
cartoons while they’re eating toast in the living room. So my wife Jessica
and I always watch music programs in the kitchen. We like dancing when
we are putting on the dishwasher or cooking!
TV Heaven: What about in the evening?
Stan: After school the kids drink juice while they’re watching TV in their
bedrooms. Paul likes drama series, but Hazel prefers reality shows. There
are some good quiz shows in the evening like Who wants to be a
millionaire? We all watch that together.

11 READING: Read the text about The Weekend Market and answer the
questions below. (5p)
Many tourists I have met have told me that one place they have to go is
the weekend market. This market is huge and has everything from bags,
souvenirs and handicrafts to many kinds of animals and many kinds of
plants. It also has a fantastic variety of local food. In other words, the
weekend market is a great place for shopping and experiencing the local
culture.
The market is located near the city's main bus station so people come from
all over the country to buy and sell goods. Moreover, it is also near a sky
train station and a subway station which makes it very convenient for city
people, especially young people who don't have cars. The market is very
large and full of hundreds of small shops and stalls. Consequently, it can
be confusing to get around. However, if you get lost, it is a good idea to
look for the clock tower which is right in the middle of the market. It will
help you Find your way.
When I walk into the market early on a Sunday morning there are people
and cars and motorcycles everywhere. You have to be careful where you
walk. Many people are bringing their goods to sell in big bags on carts and
trolleys. In fact, you might even have to jump out of the sellers' way as
they charge along the narrow walkways with their goods. In addition to
the sellers, tourists and locals are pouring in looking for something to eat
or ready to start shopping. As time goes by, the market gets more and
more crowded and you have to start squeezing past people to keep
moving.
As you walk through the market you will experience many sensations. For
example, there are many smells, scents and aromas. One moment you will
be smelling the aromas of stir-fried dishes from a small restaurant and the
next you smell the scents of orchids and other Flowers as you pass through
the cooler and more relaxing garden section. Furthermore, walking
deeper into the market, your eyes will have trouble recording so many
products with their many colors, designs and sizes. After a while you may
feel dizzy and look for a quiet place to have a rest and a refreshing drink.
Fortunately, there are many small cafes and drink stalls selling fresh
coconut juice, orange juice or iced water.
To sum up, a day at the weekend market is both a day of shopping and a
unique experience for your senses. It is a kind of magical journey that is
great as a First experience for tourists and an escape from daily life for
locals. Moreover, while it is usually hot and crowded, the atmosphere is
friendly and good-natured.

The first person to enter a house on New Year’s Day is known as
the first footer. Dark haired people are thought to be the luckiest
first footers, and it is traditional to carry a lump of coal when going
first footing.
People often make New Year resolutions at the start of the new
year. Resolutions are things that people have decided (or
resolved) to do to make their lives better, such as stopping
smoking or losing weight. Not everybody manages to keep their
New Year’s resolutions, though!
1 When is New Year’s Eve?
a) December 30
It is traditional in England to celebrate the end of the old year and
welcome in the new year at the end of December. December 31 is
New Year’s Eve. New year’s Eve is not a public holiday. Most people
go to work as usual. In the evening, many English people have parties
in their homes. Others celebrate in pubs or clubs with their friends
and families, or attend outdoor gatherings and firework displays.
Just before midnight on New Year’s Eve, people hold hands and sing
a traditional song called “Auld Lang Syne”. They count the seconds
down to the new year and when the clock strikes midnight, they hug
and kiss and wish each other a happy new year! Sometimes people
set off fireworks as the new year begins.
People often drink a toast to the coming year with a fizzy alcoholic
drink called champagne. Some people let their children stay up late
to join in with the celebrations.
New Year’s Day is celebrated on January 1. New Year’s Day is a bank
holiday. A bank holiday is a public holiday. Most shops and businesses
close for the day.
New Year’s Day is a holiday for nearly everyone in the UK. Very few
buses and trains run on New Year’s Day. Most people stay at home
and relax with their families.
There is an old superstition in Scotland and some other parts of the
UK that the first person to enter someone’s home on New Year’s Day

ANGUS: I live in a lighthouse on the west coast of Scotland.
Before I moved here I lived in Glasgow for eight years,
but I prefer living in a lighthouse. I’m a writer and I enjoy
being on my own, so this place is perfect for me. I’ve
lived here for six years and don’t ever want to leave. The
best thing about living in a lighthouse is the view. You
can see for miles in every direction, and the sunsets are
fantastic. The worst thing is the weather—it can get
very cold and windy in winter. But I’m very fit because I
have to walk up and down stairs a lot!

MEG:
I live in a motorhome with my husband, Larry. We first
met when we were living in Houston, Texas, and we’ve
been married for twelve years. In Houston I was a
waitress and Larry worked in a factory, but we both lost
our jobs at the same time. After that we decided that
we didn’t want to live in one place all the time. We’ve
lived in our motorhome since 2008 and we really love it.
It’s quite spacious and we’ve got central heating and air
conditioning, so it’s very comfortable. And the best
thing about it is that when we need to find work, we just
drive to a new town!
