On the TV screens, you can see a famous singer from Columbia, Shakira. She is famous, successful, rich and
she gives a lot of money to charities. She is a role model to many young people who wants to be like her.

Who is Shakira?
Read this short article and find out.
Shakira is a hugely successful Columbian singer. She wrote
her first song when she was 8! But she only became
famous with her third album in 1996. She moved to Miami,
Florida, a year later and started to write songs in English.
Shakira has written many popular songs. She has even won several music awards.
One of her most famous songs is Waka Waka. This was the song of 2010 FIFA
World Cup.

But Shakira has a soft heart and likes to help others. In 1997, she started a charity
in her home country that builds schools for poor children. So far they have built five
schools for more than 4,000 children.
Now we know

But do we know
when?
NO, WE DON‘T.
When we talk about past
Do we
know
WHEN?
we talk about things that happened and say when they
happened. Often because it is interesting or important:
Shakira wrote her first song when she was 8 years old.
She started her charity in 1997.
These sentences are in the PAST SIMPLE tense.
Sometimes we talk about past but we don‘t say when the
things happened. Often it is not important to say that.
Shakira has written many songs.
Her charity has helped more than 4,000 children.
These sentences are in the tense called PRESENT PERFECT.
What is
Present Perfect
We use this tense to talk about past but we do not say
when the thing happened.

I have been to the US, Canada, Mexico.
I haven‘t been to Australia.

Look at these two sentences:
I have been to the US, Canada, Mexico.
I haven‘t been to Australia.
NOTE!
I don‘t say when it happened.
The verb is in Present Perfect.
BUT:
Last year I visited Australia.
I say WHEN so the verb must be in Past Simple.
Are these
sentences
CORRECT?
She has had many hits.
Last year we have visited Poland. 
When – last year
She hasn‘t written many songs. 
In 2008 they left Columbia. 
A year later, they have won the lottery. 
You haven‘t done your homework. 
When – a year later
