The self-help group are voluntary small groups structures for mutual aids and accomplishment
of special purposes. this group ours usually formed by Peers, who have come together with
mutual assistant in satisfying a common need. in India SHGs have emerged in 1980s. but they
have roots in Bangladesh, in 1970s Professor Mohammed Yunus, A Bangladeshi social
entrepreneur begins experimenting with the innovative way to provide capital the woman at
the bottom of pyramid. The main aim of SHGs seeks to address the feminization of poverty the
global reality from which woman’s suffer from unequal legal rights. As the woman’s are not
given right to access education find capital and other iniquity that drive and Perpetuate
poverty.
The Government of India launched its first woman self-help group program in early 1980s as a
“pilot project scheme for the development of women and children in rural area to improve the
gender components India's integrated rural development project”. Today, Indians contain
millions of self-help groups across the nation.
Typically, the Indian self-help groups contains 5 to 15 members. which mainly includes the
participants of similar social and economic backgrounds “Women’s”. The main purpose of this
is to build social and economic stability in the rural area. the members of SHGs make a routine
deposit into a joint saving account. the SHG members can borrow the money from the pool
whenever they need.
In 1992 SHG State Bank linkage was established which currently serves more than 10 crowd
household. this program head significantly impacted poor householder by connecting SHGs to
maintain mainstream banking system.
WOMEN’s SELF-HELP GROUPS: During Covid -19
During the period of COVID-19 the woman self-help groups has played an extraordinary role by
providing serve different services under the critical situation they were meeting the need of
mask, sanitizer, and protective equipment, running community kitchens, fighting
misinformation, and even providing banking and financial solution to far-flung Communities.
The unpredicted 40 days lockdown to different coronavirus, collective strength off woman’s
self-help group has come to the fore.
the woman moment which started as a leap all fit some 15 years ago has proved to be an
invaluable resource in difficult times.
Meeting the shortfall in Masks, sanitizers, and protective equipment.
SHGs across the country had worked exceptionally well to make up the shortfall of mask and
personal protective equipment. In Odisha, the poor rural woman’s who were involved in
stitching the school uniforms are sewing masks instead. These woman’s have produced more
than 1million cotton masks, helping police personal 97 and health workers while earning
something for themselves.
More than 19 million masks who are produced by 20,000 SHGs across 27 Indian states, in
addition to this 100,000 lit of sanitizer and nearly 50,000 liters of hand wash.
Running Community Kitchens
During the covid situation large number of workers lose their job and for supply chain get
disturbed in remote areas. The self-help group Have set over 10,000 community kitchens across
the country to feed the poor workers and the vulnerable.
Raising Awareness
The misinformation and rumors at the time of COVID were spreading across the country. To
overcome such situation the woman R systematically using their var network of WhatsApp
groups to ward off chaos and confusion, providing critical support to the government during
this critical situation. Impact on the migrant labor, where huge number suddenly out of work
families starting walking back to their villages hundreds of miles away. Which shows how
critical it is for authentic information to filter down to the grass root.
The women are also running help desks and running essential food supply to the elder.
Providing Banking and Pension Services
To sustain during the COVID, finance is critical for people. the woman also works there the
banking cooperative emerged as a vital resource. under the bank sakhis they have provided
doorstep banking service to far-flung communities. in addition to distributing pension and
enabling the neediest to access credit into their account pro direct benefit transfers. The bank
has given the woman special orientation and provided them with financial initiative to enable
them to continue to work during the lockdown.
Conclusion
The woman’s self-help group has played an exceptional role in the hard times. By providing
different services to the poor people's and the migrant workers.
They run several programs which include-raising awareness across the nation, running
community kitchen centers for providing food 1000s of people, meeting the shortfall of masks
sanitizer and protective equipment’s, providing banking and pension services at a doorstep.
