Homemade Grain Free Dog Treats

Cook Time1 hr
Total Time1 hr 20 mins
Servings: 16 medium treats (or 32 small treats)
Ingredients
 1½ cups Chickpea Flour (165g)
 ½ cup Peanut Butter - natural (90g, no sugar or salt added, see notes)
 ½ cup Pumpkin Puree (145g)
Instructions

Making the Dough
In a large bowl, combine the chickpea flour, puree pumpkin, and peanut butter with your hand and knead it
until it forms a dough ball
If the dough feels very sticky, keep adding chickpea flour 1 tablespoon at a time until the dough is smooth and
not sticky
It should be the consistency of play-doh.
Once the dough has come together, cover it in plastic wrap and keep it in the fridge for 1 hour
This shall make the dough stiffer and easier to cut shapes out of.
Once the dough has been chilled in the fridge for an hour, take it out of the fridge and plastic wrap.
Line a cookie sheet or baking pan with parchment paper and set it close by.
Sprinkle chickpea flour liberally on the counter you are rolling out the dough on
Dust the rolling pin as well.
6.
7.
8.
9.
Sprinkle a bit of chickpea flour on the dough and rub it gently on until there is a light coating on it, then roll
out the dough to about ¼ inch to ½ inch thickness.
(Note: If the dough is still sticky, it might stick to the counter - to address that, dust the dough frequently
on both sides and flip it often while you are rolling it out)
Use a cookie cutter and cut out shapes in the dough
It is crucial to dip the cookie cutter in the chickpea flour in between each cooking cutting to prevent the dough from
sticking to it
If you don't have a cookie cutter, you can cut them into squares or rectangles with a knife.
Place the cut out shapes on the parchment paper with about ½ inch between each dog treat.
Baking & Drying it Out
1.
Pre-heat the oven to 350F (177C).
2.
Once the oven is at the right temperature, bake the cookies for 30 minutes.
3.
After 30 minutes has passed, if you have an electric oven turn off the oven and open the oven door ajar for
another 30 minutes
4.
If you have a gas stove, keep the oven door closed instead
We want to use indirect heat to dry out the dog treats so we don't burn the bottoms.
5.
Check the bottoms every 10 minutes to make sure they don't burn.
6.
Once they are done drying out in the oven, let them cool in room temperature for at least 5 hours. They
harden and dry out more if you leave them out for a few days. I like to usually leave them on a large plate for a
few days before storing them in a metal container.
Storing the Treats
1.
These can be stored in room temperature for 1-2 months, as long as there is good airflow to them. You
don't want to put them in the fridge or an airtight container since it can create and trap moisture and cause them
to go bad faster.
Notes


When buying pumpkin puree, make sure it contains no sugar, xylitol or spices in it. It should be list 100%
pumpkin puree on the ingredients label. We don't want to use pumpkin pie filling.
Make sure to use 100% natural peanut butter (the kind where the oil and the peanut butter separate). The
ingredient list should only contain peanuts, with no sugar, xylitol, salt, fillers or preservatives.
Grain-Free Pumpkin Coconut Dog Treats
Makes 48
PREP TIME10 minutes
COOK TIME50 minutes
TOTAL TIME1 hour
Ingredients
 1 15-ounce can Meijer 100% Pure Pumpkin
 1/2 cup True Goodness Creamy Just Peanuts Peanut Butter
 1/2 cup True Goodness Pure Coconut Oil, melted
 4 True Goodness Organic Cage-Free Eggs
 1 teaspoon True Goodness Organic Turmeric
 1 teaspoon True Goodness Organic Cinnamon
 1 2/3 cups coconut flour
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the pumpkin, peanut butter, coconut oil, and eggs until smooth.
3. Add in the turmeric, cinnamon, and coconut flour. Mix until well combined. Let rest for about 5-10
minutes to thicken. Coconut flour NEEDS this time to absorb the moisture. If your dough is too moist,
let it sit longer.
4. Layout a piece of parchment paper and place the dough on top. Then place another piece of parchment
on top of that. Roll the dough between the parchment sandwich until the dough is about 1/4” thick.
5. Remove the top layer of parchment paper, and then cut using cooking cutters. Remove the dough
scraps (but leave the cutouts behind), and transfer the parchment sheet with the cutouts directly to a
large baking sheet.
6. Combine the scraps, place between two sheets of new parchment, and roll, cut, and place on a baking
sheet.
7. Bake in preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until the cookies are dry and hard. Let cool completely.
8. Store in an airtight container for up to a month.
Notes


This is a very soft dough to work with!
For an optional (cute!) glaze, mix together 1/4 cup peanut butter with 2 tablespoons of melted coconut
oil. Place in a ziptop bag, snip off the corner, and drizzle on. The glaze shall harden in the fridge, but
might be a bit soft at room temperature. Keep the biscuits unglazed if planning on packaging.

Peanut Butter Biscuits – Homemade Dog Treats With Rolled Oats and Peanut Butter
Believe it or not but dogs love peanut butter, but you need to be careful that the commercially available brands
do not contain salt, additives, or spices like Chili. If you have a food processor, why not making your own using
raw Peanuts and drizzle in Peanut Oil to your processor until you get the right consistency (You might even
find you prefer this for yourself as well).
