Font theory
Interp: all debaters must use times new roman size 12 or larger font in their speech docs.
Violation: they don’t
Prefer it. 5 impacts
1) Academic honesty
a. Using any font size smaller than 12 for non-underlined text makes it hard
for opponents and judges to read
b. We should encourage academic honesty by making the entire piece of
evidence easy for people to use
2) Accessibility
a. Using any font type other than times new roman is ablelist
b. People who have poor eyesight can’t properly read things correctly
c. If the font type is too crazy, it could trigger seizures in people with eye
sensitivity
d. AND using any font type that’s cursivey puts people who didn’t learn
cursive in school at a disadvantage
e. Universally available across all document writing apps, same can’t be said
for others
3) Research
a. Forces debaters to do quality research not use crappy cards and hide
sketchy information behind insanely small text or hard to read fonts
b. Standard font for academic journals, out of round impact, practicing
research and academic norms
4) Advocacy skills
a. it allows debaters to have quality evidence interaction in a debate--- that
encourages strategic choice and argumentative streamlining
5) Fairness
a. It’s a good evidence norm for all debaters, so we can all focus on the
actual debate
b. Unfair for me to waste prep time making font bigger, or changing font
style just to read it
