THAT SERIUOSLY DISRUPTS THE
FUNCTIONING OF A COMMUNITY OR
SOCIETY AND CAUSES HUMAN,
MATERIAL, ECONOMIC AND
ENVIRONMENTAL LOSSES THAT
EXCEED THE COMMUNITIES ABILITY
TO COPE BY NATURE.
WHAT IS A DISASTER?
• SOIL EROSION
• SEISMIC ACTIVITY
• TECHTONIC MOVEMENTS
• AIR PRESSURE
• OCEAN CURRENTS
• IMBALANCE IN THE ENVIRONMENT
• POLLUTION
• MOON ACTIVITY
• HUMAN ACTIVITIES
CAUSES OF DISASTERS
• INDIVIDUAL IMPACT-felt physically, emotionally,
mentally, financially, destruction to property, loss of
resources, personal injury or illness, loss of security and
access, trauma and stress/ depression, migration
• COMMUNITY IMPACT-communities absorbs the
impact of natural disasters and lose so much resources
• ECONOMIC IMPACT-reduced tax revenue, loss of
infrastructure, expense of reclamation efforts, decrease on
gross domestic product
• ENVIRONMENTAL
IMPACT-changes
landscape,
damage of the environment, loss of crops , animals and
livestocks
EFFECTS OF DISASTERS
NATURAL DISASTERS-when a natural
hazard affects human in an adverse manner.

WHAT ARE NATURAL
DISASTERS?
• IT IS LOCATED IN THE PACIFIC RING OF
FIRE OR TYPHOON BELT-A LARGE
PACIFIC OCEN REGION WHERE MANY OF
EARTHS VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS AND
EARTHQUAKES OCCUR. APPROXIMATELY
80 TYPHOONS DEVELOP ABOVE
TROPICAL WATERAS OF WHICH 19 ENTER
THE PHILIPPINE REGION AND SIX TO
NINE MAKE A LAND FALL.
WHY IS THE PHILIPPINES A
DISASTER PRONE AREA?
• HAZARD- SOMETHING THAT CAUSES
HARM OR POTENTIAL DAMAGE OR
ADVERSE EFFECTS ON SOMETHING OR
SOMEONE UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS
• RISK-THE CHANCE OR PROBABILITY
(HIGH OR LOW) THAT ANY HAZARD WILL
ACTUALLY CAUSE SOMEBODY HARM
WHAT IS RISK AND
HAZARD?
• VULNERABILITY-IS THE INABILITY TO RESIST
HAZARD OR TO RESPOND WHEN DISASTER HAS
OCCURRED. EX. PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN PLAINS
ARE MORE VULNERABLE TO FLOODS THAN
PEOPLE WHO LIVE UPLAND.
• CAPACITY-REFERS TO ALL THE STRENGTHS
ATTRIBUTES AND RESOURCES AVAILABLE
WITHIN A COMMUNITY, ORGANIZATION OR
SOCIETY TO AMANGE AND REDUCE DISASTER
RISK AND STRENGTHEN RESILIENCE
WHAT IS VULNERABILITY AND
CAPACITY?
• THE CONCEPT AND PRACTICE OF REDUCING
DISASTER
RISK
THROUGH
SYSTEMATIC
EFFORTS TO ANALYZE AND REDUCE THE
CAUSAL FACTORS OF DISASTERS. REDUCING
EXPOSURE
TO
HAZARDZ,
LESSENING
VULNERABILITY OF PEOPLE AND PROPERTY,
WISE MANAGEMENT OF LAND AND THE
ENVIRONMENT AND IMPROVING PREAREDNESS
AND EARLY WARNING FOR ADVERSE EVENTS.
WHAT IS DISASTER READINESS
AND RISK REDUCTION?
• IDENTIFY DISASTERS THAT HAVE OCCURRED IN
THE PHILIPPINES FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS.
ANALYZE THEIR CAUSES AND IMPACTS ON THE
COMMUNITIES.

GROUP TASK: BASIC
MAPPING OF DISASTERS
• WHAT WENT WRONG THAT LED TO THE
DISASTER?
• WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE BY THE
GOVERNMENT OR THE COMMUNITY TO REDUCE
THE IMPACT OF THE DISASTER?
• WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO AVOID ANOTHER
DISASTER?
