How Can
Poor Oral
Health Affect
the Rest of
the Body
There are various reasons for which we
need to give importance to our oral
health. Your mouth and teeth can have
problems if you have bad breath, cavities
or gum diseases. In our body the bacteria
can enter via our mouth. Our body parts
can have inflammation or infection if in the
bloodstream the bacteria enter. Now I am
going to describe how poor oral health
affects the rest of the body.
1. Dementia –
When in the bloodstream the bacteria
enter through the mouth because of
gingivitis then dementia can occur. It can
result in memory loss because brain cells
get killed here.
2. Infertility –
Conceiving and sustaining a healthy
pregnancy can be very difficult for a
woman if her overall health gets affected
because of gum disease.
3. Cardiovascular disease –
There is a possibility of heart disease if
your oral health is poor. Periodontal
disease occurs because of bacteria.
Hardening of the arteries occurs if in the
bloodstream this bacterium enters. We
call this condition as atherosclerosis. The
heart attack can occur because of heart
blockages that occur as a result of
atherosclerosis.
4. Kidney disease –
Kidney disease can occur because of
periodontal disease. If the immune
system is weaker in some individuals,
then gum disease can occur in them. This
further causes kidney disease.
