Phase Two:
Title: Speaking and Listening Assessment: Room 101
What is Room 101?
 Room 101 was created by George Orwell in his novella
1984. It is a room where a person’s greatest fears are
used to torture and control them. (Nice eh?)
 The BBC have adapted this idea slightly and have created
a T.V. program in which celebrities select items they hate
and try to persuade the presenter to banish them
forever to room 101.

Model Response
If there is 1 thing I would love to banish to the deep
dark depths of Room 101 it has to be ugly feet! These
deformed monstrosities are on show practically
everywhere I go: on the beach on holiday; oozing out of
ill-fitting sandals in the summer and, worst of all,
splashing about and contaminating the water at my
local public pool.
Now I know that feet are very important appendages as
without them we would find walking a bit difficult.
However, if you have in-growing toe-nails and hard
flaky skin perhaps you should keep them hidden away?
I would even actively advocate the wearing of socks
with sandals if it means that these foul feet are hidden
away forever…
Phase 3: Demonstrate
Create a mind map of items you hate.
You cannot include:
• Members of this school (pupils and teachers)
• Family members
• Any racist/ homophobic or racially motivated choices.
• Anything that may cause offence to group members.
TIP: Avoid trying to select world issues such as poverty, war
and disease. Select items that are personal to you and can
be exaggerated for effect.
