Earthquake Newspaper
Imagine that a large earthquake has just hit a major city on the west coast of North
America (Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, or Los Angeles). There is
widespread damage, chaos and confusion. Create a newspaper for the days
following the large disaster to help people understand what happened and why it
happened.
A. Your newspaper should
a. Look like a newspaper
b. Be written in your own words (NO COPY AND PASTE)
c. Have at least one labeled map
d. Have at least one labeled picture of the damage
e. Be 2 pages long
B. You must include the following “articles” in your newspaper
a. Science Article
i. Epicenter Location-provide a map of the location of the quake
ii. Area Impacted
iii. Date/Magnitude
iv. Which plates were involved?
v. What kind of fault caused the earthquake?
b. Human Aspect Article
i. Describe the human impact in terms of deaths, damage done on
buildings and other infrastructure
ii. Have an eye-witness account of the damage (Bonus points if
you can find this, if you can’t it is ok)
iii. Describe how the impact of this earthquake could have been
lessened by earthquake preparedness- what could have been
done before the earthquake to reduce the death toll/damage
done?
C. Resource
a. You MUST include a list of websites/resources you used in a
correctly formatted works cited page.
