1- Read the questions and the definitions. Try to guess if you do no t know the answers.
1.What is the rank scale analysis ?
a-It is a unit of grammar. It contains at least a Subject and
one main Verb (Alternberg & Vago, 2010, p.207)
Eg.: Jon has two daughters.

b- It is the basic element of language. It is relatively fixed
in its internal form and independent in its role in larger
units.

c- It is separated according to meaning units;
For example:–‘Jon + has /two daughters’.
= Subject + Predicate
= Noun phrase + verb phrase (+ noun phrase)
OR = Noun Phrase + Verb Phrase + Noun Phrase.
d-The smallest unit of grammatical structure with lexical
or functional meaning. For example, sadness has two
morphemes, the adjectival base or stem sad and the
derivational morpheme –ness . The verb listens is made
up by two morphemes, the verbal stem listen and the
third-person inflectional suffix –s.
e- It is a unit of writing – it starts with a capital letter and
ends with a full stop (Halliday, 1994).
