CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
The first recorded patient treatment by electricity was by Johann Gottlob Krüger in 1743. John
Wesley promoted electrical treatment as a universal solution in 1747 but was rejected by
mainstream medicine. Giovanni Aldini treated insanity with static electricity 1823–1824.
The first medical treatments with electricity in London have been recorded as far back as 1767 at
Middlesex Hospital in London using a special apparatus.

Many improvements have been made to the basic technology over the last centuries highest
development in computer technology and complex image processing. As the track of development
of these emerging technologies, the need for electrical energy also grows up and play vital role for
the successful implementation of these technologies.
The energy resource management is a major concern worldwide. Energy management activities
minimize environmental impacts of the energy production. Therefore, electric energy consumption
monitoring has been proposed as an important process which makes immediate reductions in
energy use. Now a day, advances in electronics have allowed the implementation of many technological
solutions that could help to reduce energy consumption.
Electrical energy uses for medical electrical energy users for suitable working environment and
improved medical services. The commonly used electronic health care devices are X-ray, MRI,
ultrasound, Microscope etc…
Electric power, produced from central generating stations and distributed over an electrical
transmission grid, is widely used in industrial, commercial, consumer applications and for
residential use. Also use for electric motors power manufacturing machinery and propel subways
and railway trains. Electrical energy is used directly in processes such as extraction of aluminum
from its ores and in production of steel in electric arc furnaces. Electrical power is essential to
health care areas. Electric power is used to provide air conditioning in hot climates, and in some
places electric power is an economically competitive source of energy for building space heating.
1.1 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Now a day, the level of electricity consumption is increasing each year because firstly, the
electrical power distribution system does not meet the need, and the way user use is very
elementary. In addition, using electrical medical equipment like X-ray, MRI, ultrasound,
Microscope are mandatory for the better health care utility offering. The electrical equipment’s are
used continuously in hospital. This will be contributing to the increasing level of electricity waste.
Even though electrical medical devices are mandatory and even some of them are costly, they may
get out of functioning because of less or high power distribution or power fluctuation.
Most conventional prepaid power meters currently installed in hospital only display the total real
time usage of its power and the amount of electricity available only. It is not possible to display
the exact voltage level when there is voltage fluctuation, and regulate the amount of voltage needed
for individual hospital power consumption. And often these power meters are placed in an
inconvenient location which makes regular viewing somewhat difficult. The power meters also
lack the ability to monitor appliances individually; thus hiding vital information about individual
appliances.
1.2 OBJECTIVES
1.2.1 GENERAL OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this project is to design medical equipment electrical energy monitoring
system for hospital application.
1.2.2 specific objective
 To simulate effective monitoring system of electrical energy consumption in medical
devices with their energy consumption level.
 To display information data on LCD screen
 To control when the electrical voltage exceeds or below the adjusted limit
 To notify when there is voltage fluctuation
1.3 Significance of Project
In the next discussion we will describe how our project intended to solve problem caused by
power fluctuation which results electronic medical equipment to damage.
