Persuasive Writing
How to make someone come
around to your way of thinking!
How to persuade
• You want to go to Alton Towers with your
friends, but you know you parents would prefer
to bring you.
• What tactics would you use to try to persuade
them?
• E.g. bribery (e.g. I’ll do the washing up for a
month); negotiating (e.g. if I can go, I’ll do my
homework as soon as I get in from school);
flattery (e.g. ‘you look really lovely, Mum; ‘you’re
so good at football, Dad), etc.
• Write down 5 phrases you would use.

How many techniques can we spot?
Kolymbia lies on the east coast of the island of Rhodes
and is ideal for those seeking a quiet spot in which to
relax, unwind and soak up the sun, like a sponge
soaking up water. It enjoys a picturesque setting with
impressive mountains in the distance, suitable for
those of you who like an active holiday. In Kolymbia
itself, you will find a magnificent, white, sandy beach
- ideal for swimming, water sports and fun. Kolymbia
is a Greek resort that remains unique, unspoilt and
undiscovered and so is quiet all year round. It offers
a good range of sporting activities, a few shops and a
good selection of restaurants. You will love it!
Look at examples of holiday brochures
and select 2 resorts/hotels.
1. In pairs and writing the terms and the
examples in books, how many different
techniques can you spot in both of them?
2. How do they make you, the reader, feel?
3. Which resort would you like to go to and
why?
Recap
• Think back to the best holiday you ever had.
• Write a descriptive paragraph, using as many of the
persuasive techniques as possible. Remember: you
want to persuade people to go there too!
Peer Assess
Swap your books and identify as
many techniques as you can.
