Trades are a daily necessity in life as it allows individuals to get certified ethically and
reasonably. These trades are born from industrial driven professionals such as electricians,
HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air condition), and plumbers, who are performing essential
requirements for everyday living (Ontario College of Trades,2020). The College of Trades is
protected by the public whilst promoting various types of skilled trades, but primarily for those
that are interested in hands-on learning as it allows the individuals to work with companies to
gain and expand on valuable knowledge associated with their given profession. The College of
Trade works in partnership with the Ministry of Training to provide sufficient support to those
who work in the skilled trade to aid in the economy as well as let their voices to be heard, as well
as to modernize the apprenticeship and skilled trades system (Ontario College of Trades,
2020)The services of the skilled trade are provided to clients living in residential homes along
with individuals working in the industrial as well as a retail business. This provides clients with
necessities such as plumbing, electricity, and transportation important in daily living.
In regards to the Canadian Human Rights legislation by regulating the amount that the
trade is paid and the amount of training given to the apprentices learning the trade. The Ontario
College of Trades is governed under the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act,
2009, S.O. 2009, c. 22 (Law Document English View, 2018). This has been established by the
government as skilled trade is important for economic sustainability, by allowing the acts and
decision making to be done by those who know the issues and the influence of the decisions of
the people’s jobs (Ontario College of Trades, 2020). This allows for individuals in the trade
voices to be heard, as well as, making sure that the public is also protected by ensuring proper
scopes of practice along with applicable guidelines for the trades to follow to maintain the right
practice.

The organization is headed by members – who represent different trades through themselveslike services sectors, industrial, construction, and even one public college representative. Its
major motive is to find the best and skilled people in Ontario from all over the world, hence it is
even promoting immigration for skilled workers.
Its values are governed by accountability, transparency in its operations and to represent
underrepresented trades.
Another major step taken was in 2017 when the board of directors highlighted 3 areas of priority1. Members (Improving the apprenticeship system, executing enforcement and advancing diversity)

3. “Our People”
The Ontario Bringing Participant Assistant program (OBPAP) gives financial help of up to
$5,000 to cover tuition, books, and equipment for whosoever becomes eligible, international
trade individuals. To provide support to women, it also has Women in the Trade (WITT)
Scholarship Funds to foster personal growth of women as they opt for education in electrical,
HVAC, restoration, landscaping, appliance repair, or glass repair and installation.
Diversity can help the organization to maintain a competitive advantage in both global and
changing domestic markets by getting a greater choice of job applicants to the firm. A diverse
workforce also offers greater flexibility and additional capabilities in some instances. It reflects
an organization’s commitment to broader social goals and projects a better image of the
organization to clients and other constituents. Including a diverse workforce will result in
increased creativity, higher innovation, faster problem solving, better decision making, increased

profits, higher employee engagement, reduced employee turnover, and better company
reputation for Ontario Colleges of Trade.
In your view, what is the role of human resource management in helping organizations promote
workplace diversity?
Workplace Diversity means in the organization the employees have different characteristics such
as different gender, race, ethnicity, sex, age, education, language backgrounds, and so on.
Human Resource management plays an important role in creating and promoting workplace
diversity as they hire people for the organization.
HR is responsible for hiring therefore they keep in mind the race and gender while going through
the hiring process as different communities will bring different ideas and innovations to the
workplace. Not only in hiring, HR plays an important role, in creating diversity-friendly policies,
and training on diversity is also a part of human resource management so the employees can
work-friendly with each other and promote the organization.
