Calorimetry
A simple method for measuring the chemical energy content of a food is to burn the seed and
use the heat released to increase the temperature of water.
Watch the short movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZB7kzKUZlc and read the
description in textbook (p.9) and then answer questions below:
1. List the materials and equipment used in this experiment.
2. List the main steps of procedure.
3. List precautions.
4. Explain how to calculate the energy content.
5. When 0.5 g of food is burned, 20 cm3 of water warms up by 10°C. What is the energy
content of the food in J/g?
6. Discuss the reasons for the differences between results obtained from this experiment
and the results given on food packets.
7. Suggest improvements for used method.
Use the simulation of the bomb calorimeter. Check the chemical energy content of various
products. Answer questions below simulation.
