Formative Piece: Macbeth and Son
A Chance Meeting Between Lulach and Luke
The setting is a beach in Australia. Lulach and Luke come face to face while walking along the
beach, near the water’s edge. They stop, look at one another and start to talk. By some strange
quirk of time and space they have both met while they are teenagers, before Lulach’s foster
father is hailed as king at Scone.
Luke: Goo’day.
Lulach: Hail.
Luke: Hail? That’s a funny word. (He looks at Lulach’s clothes for a moment.) You always
dress like that?
Lulach; Like what? I think your clothes are strange.
Luke: Yea?
Lulach: Yea.
Luke: (looks out to see for a moment and then back at Lulach): Is that a Scottish accent?
Lulach: Aye.
Luke: Does ‘aye’ mean ‘yes?’
Lulach: It does.
The two boys are quiet for a moment.

You will need to retype the bit I have written before you start adding your own
dialogue.
All sentences have to be proper sentences and have to make sense.
Everything has to be written in present tense.
Make sure you include your full name where indicated, at the very top of the page.
The text must be typed: Times New Roman, size 12.
The name of the novel must be placed in italics.
All words that describe movement or action should be placed in italics, as shown
above.
No colours are allowed, apart from black and white.
There are no paragraphs in this piece. Plays and film scripts are not written in
paragraphs.

Things you can have the boys talk to one another about should include:












Where they live.
What they do.
What their parents do.
How they feel about where they live and how they live.
How they feel about having a foster father.
What their foster father does.
What sort of a man their foster father is.
How they feel about their mother.
Whether or not they find life difficult.
What they worry about.
What is expected of them, later in life.
Anything else you think is important.

Do not have a boy say anything that is out of character or that goes against what he
believes.
Remember that Lulach would not know anything about television, phones, movies,
cars, aircraft, etc.
You also do not have to explain things in complete detail. People usually don’t do that
when they talk to one another.

This work is due by the end of Week 3. (Sent to me by that Friday night.)
Send as an attachment to a Direct Message.
Place your full name and 8B on BOTH your attachment (the work itself) and your Direct
Message/ HAND IN YOUR COPY TO THE TEACHER IF YOU ARE AT SCHOOL.
It is important that you remember everything you have been taught about writing sentences
when you work on this piece.
Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance if you think you need it.
