Maximized Manhood is a
powerful book for men. It
doesn’t pull and punches.
Chapter 1: Maximum Sentence –
1 Corinthians 10:6-9 describes the
five reasons why the Israelites did
not enter the land of promise.
6 Now
these things became our examples, to the intent
that we should not lust after evil things as they also
lusted. 7 And do not become idolaters as were some of
them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and
drink, and rose up to play.” 8 Nor let us commit sexual
immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twentythree thousand fell; 9 nor let us [a]tempt Christ, as some of
them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents;
These are the same reasons that
many men do not live maximized
lives in the blessing of God.
LUST
A strong craving or desire, often of a sexual nature. Though
used relatively infrequently (twenty-nine times) in Scripture, a
common theme can be seen running through its occurrences.
The word is never used in a positive context; rather, it is always
seen in a negative light, relating primarily either to a strong
desire for sexual immorality or idolatrous worship. In secular
literature, the word indicates only a strong desire and can carry
either good or bad connotations.
IDOLATRY
The most prevalent form of idolatry in biblical times was the
worship of images or idols that represented or were thought to
embody various pagan deities. Idolatry is a major theme of the
Bible. It challenges God's sovereignty and attempts to offer an
alternate explanation to the issues of life.
FORNICATION
The word fornication is a blanket term for illicit sexual
intercourse in all its various forms. Adultery is fornication in a
married state (Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological, and
Ecclesiastical Literature). These are sins as defined in the
seventh commandment (Ex. 20:14 and 1Cor. 6:18-20).
Fornication comes from five separate words in the Bible, two
from the Hebrew and three from the Greek (zanah, taznuwth,
porneia, porneuo, ekporneuo). These words all share similar
connotations. They can mean illicit sexual relations between
two unmarried persons.
They can also mean adultery, whoredom, or a spiritual act of
unfaithfulness in worship of Yahweh, as Israel committed being
the betrothed of Yahweh.
TEMPTING CHRIST
The attempt to put to the test or make trial of
one or more of God's attributes,
such as His knowledge, will, power, or wisdom.
MURMURING
The Hebrew word (lun) denotes the semi-articulated
mutterings of disaffected persons. It is used in connection with
the complaints of the Israelites in the desert against Yahweh on
the one hand, and against Moses and Aaron on the other hand
(Exodus 16:7,8; Numbers 14:27,36; 16:11; 17:5). In three places
(Deuteronomy 1:27; Psalms 106:25; Isaiah 29:24), "murmur"
translates a Hebrew word (raghan) which suggests the
malicious whispering of slander.
