Clinical Foundations Case study 1:
Analisa is a 26 years old female, married and highly educated outgoing person with a
Master’s degree under her name. She was admitted in a surgical ward for post removal
of an ovarian tumor, and now she is experiencing some anxiety symptoms and her
pathology results are not yet back because of the strike in the pathology department.
There is a family history of cancer in her family, her grandmother passed away recently
after an illness of breast cancer and she was very close to her. She was an outgoing
young woman involved in various social and work activities but now is avoiding to be
with friends or group of people. She is a young married woman still in a child bearing
age so losing the ovaries at that age is a very stressful situation and the expectations to
build a family with her husband and the fear of reaction of the in-laws if the pathological
results may say the tumor is malignant. She is obviously an ambitious young lady who
was still at her prime of her carrier so all the waiting brings feelings of guilt, anger,
anxiety and disappointment because she still wants to achieve more on her life.
Analisa, a 26-year-old married woman is referred to you as a Consultation Liaison
Nurse Practitioner three days post- surgery for removal of an ovarian tumor. Analisa
began experiencing episodes of anxiety on her first post-operative day. The results of
the pathology have not been obtained because of labour unrest in the pathology
department. There is a slim chance that the tumor is malignant. Analisa is a highly
articulate young woman who obtained her Master's degree at 21 yrs., old, grew up with
her parents who both were activists during Apartheid and frequently had to leave home
to escape police leaving her with her slightly older brother, Vuyo. Analisa's
grandmother, to whom she was much attached, passed away a few months ago of
breast cancer that had already metastasized. She still cannot come to terms with her
Granny's passing. Analisa is outgoing and socially engaged involving herself in civic
movements and development work and has a circle of close and loyal friends. She,
however, has distanced herself from her social circle recently. Although the anxiety
manifested itself in hospital, she reports feeling anxious with very uncomfortable
physical symptoms almost on a daily basis for some time now,
