Virgin Start Procedure
1.
On the EMS CDU, enter diagnostic mode (CNTL followed by bottom left and right key.
2.
Select System test button, which will bring you on the SPECIAL TEST MODE.

Beside assembly, select the components that you want to perform a virgin start on it.(left key to select
the line and right key to change the components)

Note: Use the EMS CDU that you want to perform the virgin start on it.(Use CDU 1 for
Virgin start on #1)
4.
Perform virgin start by selecting button on the left followed by the button on the right. If this step is
done properly, it will pass from IDLE to PROC’G at the bottom of the screen , you will see the
following message: virgin start will occur on power-on.
5.
Once completed shut complete A/C power (no Avail light and wait at least 5 min)
6.
Put power back on the aircraft and wait 5 min.
7.
On EMS CDU - select System - ELEC and ensure all breakers are selected IN.
8.
Select TEST at bottom of EMS CDU and perform the SLAT/FLAP reset.
9.
Select EMER CONT and make sure BUS Isolation are all ON.
10. Select CNTL at the bottom of the EMS CDU and ensure that all power feeds are ON.
11. Select TEST at the bottom, of the EMS CDU, on BUS isolation page ensure all busses are ON.
12. RE-do a complete power shut down (Black cockpit, No Avail light).
NOTE:
•
The virgin start does reset the pointers and clear the NVM on the SPDA’s, DCPC and ACPC, but for
the CDU’s only reset the counters and the NVM on the CDU does not get cleared.
•
To validate that the virgin start was perform properly, the power cycle counter could be check for each
unit where the Virgin start has took place. To do so, perform the following.
o
For the EMS CDU, go in the signboard menu, DAU out and check Label 222. The counter
should be 0 then 1, 2…. Each CDU need to be check individually.
o
For all the other units, go in the signboard, the IN selection for the corresponding LRU should
be selected. The go to Label 222. ) 0 means no power cycle.
