Sarcopenia • Age- related loss of muscle mass and strength. What is Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) & Instrumental Activities Of Daily Living (IADLs)? • They represent key life tasks that people need to manage, in order to live at home and be fully independent. Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) • are basic self care tasks. Such as: o Eating o Bathing o Toileting o Walking o Dressing Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) • Actions that require some intellectual competence and planning. Physical Limitations (PLIMs) • Activities that reflect functional limitations such as walking a block or sitting for about two hours. • What causes functional Limitations and Disability in Older Adults? The main causes are Diseases, particularly multiple chronic illnesses. • How important Are socioeconomic factors? • It has been a powerful determinant of health. as a general rule, wealthy people tend to be in better health than people of poorer status. HOUSING OPTIONS Sense of place – cognitive and emotional attachments that a person puts on his or her place of residence, by which a “house” is made into a “home”. Functional Health – ability to perform ADLs, IADLs and PLIMs. HOUSING OPTIONS Assisted Living Facilities -a housing facility for people with disabilities or for adults who cannot or choose not to live independently. Nursing Home – a place for people who don't need to be in a hospital but can't be cared for at home. Elder Abuse and Neglect • physical, emotional, or sexual harm inflicted upon an older adult, their financial exploitation, or neglect of their welfare by people who are directly responsible for their care.
